An ASD heart defect is a defect from birth in a newborn’s heart. It refers to a hole in the wall (called the septum) that divides the upper chambers of the heart. It can vary in size and sometimes can close by itself. In some situations, a patient might need to undergo an atrial septal defect surgery.

Statistics of affected individuals

Approximately 10% of the Indian infant mortality is attributed to congenital heart disease alone. An atrial septal defect is a type of congenital heart disease that interrupts the flow of blood patterns between the two chambers. The statistical data shows that the most common type of ASD is the Ostium Secundum. The condition is more common in females than males.

Types of Atrial Septal Defect

Ostium Secundum (ASD 2 or ASD II): A common atrial septal defect type that occurs there is a hole in the centre of the septum.

MRI: This test uses radio waves and a magnetic field to create 3D images of the heart and other bodily tissues and organs. If echocardiography cannot detect an atrial defect, a specialist will recommend you to go for an MRI. 

Right heart catheterization: In this test, a thin and small tube is inserted into the heart via a peripheral vein. A specialist might also use a tiny balloon at the catheter end. Left heart catheterization: A special dye is injected into the blood vessels via a catheter in this procedure. After that, the test results will give details of the defect or other heart disease.

Is ASD life-threatening?
