What is Metrogyl 400 used for?

Can someone tell what Metrogyl 400 is used for? I was prescribed it for a stomach infection, but I’ve also heard it’s used for different kinds of infections. Just want to understand what it actually treats.

    Dear Reader,

Metrogyl 400 contains metronidazole, an antibiotic and antiprotozoal medicine. It can help treat various infections caused by bacteria and certain parasites, not just stomach infections.

Here’s a simple breakdown of what it’s used for:

    Common uses of Metrogyl 400:

    • Stomach and intestinal infections, such as amoebiasis, giardiasis, or bacterial gastroenteritis.
    • Mouth and gum infections, like gum abscesses or periodontitis.
    • Vaginal infections, such as bacterial vaginosis or trichomoniasis.
    • Skin and wound infections: especially those caused by bacteria that grow without oxygen (anaerobic bacteria).
    • Post-surgical infections: to help prevent or treat infections in the abdomen or pelvic area after surgery.

    How it works:

Metronidazole kills or stops the growth of certain bacteria and parasites by damaging their DNA. It’s particularly effective against anaerobic bacteria, which thrive in low-oxygen environments such as the gut and deep tissues.

    Important tips:

    • Take it exactly as prescribed, usually after food to avoid stomach upset.
    • Avoid alcohol while taking Metrogyl and for at least 72 hours after finishing the antibiotic course, as mixing the two can cause nausea, vomiting, and headache.
    • Complete the full course, even if you start feeling better early.

So yes, your doctor likely prescribed it for your stomach infection, but it’s also commonly used for other bacterial and parasitic infections in different parts of the body.Antibiotics should be taken only when prescribed by a doctor.

    Wishing you good health.
