My brother is 61 years and has had diabetes for the past 13 years. Recently, he fell and was unconscious for a few minutes. He was hospitalised for the same, and the doctor told us that he has a complete heart blockage. The doctors have inserted a pacemaker in his heart. He is fine now. But, is there a relationship between diabetes and complete heart block? Can diabetes lead to this heart condition?
Diabetes may cause several complications related to the heart. High blood sugar levels can damage the walls of the blood vessels in the heart. The damage can lead to the deposition of fat-like substances present in the bloodstream, which can affect the blood supply to the heart. This can result in blockage. A part of the heart supplied by this vessel may get affected. Thus, resulting in the blockage.
However, since proper action was taken on time, he could recover well. Diabetes can be managed with proper lifestyle modifications and medical management. Simple regular exercises like brisk walking for 20-30 mins per day, yoga, and inculcating a healthy lifestyle can prolong life and help him keep his blood sugar levels in check.
