I have had diabetes since 2014. I have been on allopathic medicines for treating my diabetes. Recently, my creatinine level was high, and my HbA1c was also above 8. A friend has suggested IME-9, an Ayurvedic medicine approved by the Government of India. Is IME-9 medicine safe to take? Are there any side effects of IME-9?

Uncontrolled diabetes may affect some organs of your body. The most common organs that diabetes impacts are the heart, kidneys, and blood vessels.

Having high creatinine levels doesn’t always indicate damage to the kidneys. Creatinine levels can go high in conditions such as immediately after exercise and when on a high protein diet.

However, having HbA1c on the higher side generally means inadequate control over blood sugar levels. Therefore, you should adopt a healthy lifestyle along with the prescribed medications. Here are a few tips:
To have a healthy lifestyle try to exercise daily. Depending on your age, these exercises can help best; yoga, brisk walking, jogging, and cycling.
Try to avoid oily/ junk food as much as possible and add as many fibre rich food items as possible to your diet.
Keep a check on your calorie intake and keep yourself hydrated at all times.

Ayurvedic medications may or may not show improvement in blood sugar levels, and there is no scientific evidence for the same.

However, it would be advisable to consult your treating doctor before starting any new medication. Your doctor will help to rule out any potential drug interactions with your prescribed medications.
