I have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, and my profession requires me to drink. Can you tell me if drinking whiskey in safe amounts will cause any complications?

Alcohol can significantly affect your blood glucose levels. If drinking alcohol cannot be avoided, do not drink on an empty stomach. Also, avoid binge drinking or sustained drinking as it may cause Hypoglycaemia (lower blood sugar than normal).
Alcohol has a lot of calories. Mixing sugary drinks and sweet wines can further raise blood sugar levels. You can choose to mix your alcohol with water or soda instead; it will further limit your consumption. Try drinking only when your diabetes is well in control.
Alcohol can also stimulate appetite and lure you into binge eating, which can cause a sudden rise in blood sugar. Uncontrolled alcohol consumption can also result in high blood pressure, flushing, increased heart rate and nausea. These symptoms can mask the symptoms associated with low blood sugar.
