I am taking Metrogyl 400 for loose motion, but now I feel a metallic taste and nausea. Is it a normal side effect?

I’m taking Metrogyl 400 for loose motion, and since yesterday, I’ve been feeling a metallic taste in my mouth and slight nausea. Is this a normal side effect, or should I stop taking it?

    Dear Reader,

Yes, what you’re describing is actually a common and usually harmless side effect of Metrogyl 400 (metronidazole).

    Here’s what’s happening,

    Common side effects:

    • Metallic or bitter taste in the mouth
    • Mild nausea or stomach discomfort
    • Occasionally, loss of appetite, dry mouth, or a feeling of dizziness

These effects occur because metronidazole slightly affects the natural taste receptors and the digestive tract. They usually go away after you finish the course or reduce in intensity after a few doses.

    What you can do:

    • Take the tablet after food to reduce nausea.
    • Drink plenty of water and rinse your mouth often to reduce the metallic taste.
    • Avoid alcohol completely during treatment and for at least 72 hours after finishing, as it can cause severe nausea and vomiting with metronidazole.

    See your doctor if:

    • The nausea becomes severe or leads to vomiting.
    • You develop a headache, dizziness, tingling in your hands/feet, or abdominal pain that doesn’t go away.
    • The metallic taste becomes very strong, or you can’t tolerate the medicine.

So yes, the metallic taste and mild nausea are expected side effects, not an allergy or serious reaction. Don’t stop the medicine abruptly unless your doctor advises it, because that might leave the infection only partially treated.

    Wishing you good health.
