I am a 27-year-old boy and I have type 1 diabetes. I have been facing some complications for the past few years like sometimes, I have chest pain, fast heart rates. I even face erectile dysfunction problem. Also, I have noticed facial numbness on my cheeks near the right side of my lips. Most of the time, my hands are cold and sometimes I have a tingling sensation on the tip of my toe and fingers. My memory is also getting weak. What test should I do? Should I see a cardiologist or diabetologist?
Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to erectile dysfunction as it can damage the blood supply to the penis and the nerves controling the erection. High blood sugar levels can damage the nerve cells (diabetic neuropathy) and cells in the brain that may cause memory loss and other symptoms like tingling and numbness. Poor blood circulation can be a reason for cold hands. Fluctuating blood sugars can also affect the heart.
Type 1 diabetes requires good diet and lifestyle control, regular monitoring of blood sugars and regular follow-up with a diabetologist. Carry all your previous reports and records of blood sugar monitoring. Note down all your problems and queries that you want to discuss with your doctor.
Your condition will require clinical examination by your doctor and some tests. You may be advised tests like HbA1C, fasting and postprandial blood glucose, lipid profile, liver and kidney function tests, Thyroid profile, urine test, ECG and Echo.
Before undergoing any of the tests, consult with a diabetologist for a better understanding and diagnosis.
