Can heatwaves cause headaches?

I’m a 27-year-old living in Noida regularly commuting for work and site visits in the current hot weather. I use a bike to commute. Lately, I’ve been experiencing frequent headaches. My friend said that these headaches are caused by the ongoing heatwave. How can I prevent these headaches? I do not want to take painkillers everyday.

    Dear Reader,

I understand the intense heat in Noida, with temperatures reaching up to 50 degrees Celsius. Commuting daily in such conditions can indeed be challenging.

Regarding your concern, yes, a heatwave can contribute to headaches, but it’s not the sole factor. Headaches during a heatwave may stem from prolonged exposure to heat and bright sunlight, dehydration, and fluctuations in blood pressure.

Let me share some tips that can help you:

    1. Stay hydrated – Drink plenty of water and replenish electrolytes by consuming buttermilk, lemonade, ORS at regular intervals.
    2. Wear good quality sunglasses while driving – If you wear power glasses then your sunglasses should also have the same power since you need to wear them for long periods of time while driving. Consult an eye doctor for an eye checkup and get appropriate sunglasses made.
    3. Take breaks – If your commute requires prolonged sun-exposure take breaks in shade or air cooled areas and hydrate yourself. This will allow your body to regulate the body-temperature. Stop driving and ask for help if you feel dizzy or low anytime while driving.
    4. Avoid sun – I understand that you need to travel during the day, but try and schedule your travel in such a way that you can stay indoors during peak heat hours.
    5. Cover yourself well – Cover yourself well with breathable cotton fabric.

Take care of your diet and nutrition. Check your BP and blood sugar levels. Visit a doctor to rule out other possible causes of recurrent headaches and follow their advice.

I hope the temperature drops down soon. Till then take good care of yourself to stay safe from heat wave.

    Hope this helps

    Wish you good health.
