I’m taking Clavam 625 for a throat infection, but after two days, I started having loose motion and stomach pain. Is this a normal side effect of the antibiotic, or should I stop taking it and call my doctor?

Dear Reader,
Loose motions (diarrhoea) and stomach pain are among the common side effects of Clavam 625 (Amoxicillin and Clavulanic Acid). This happens because, while the antibiotic kills the harmful bacteria causing your throat infection, it can also disturb the balance of healthy bacteria in your gut.
It’s important not to stop taking the medicine without consulting your doctor. Stopping the antibiotic course early can lead to a recurrence of the infection and may make the bacteria resistant to future treatment.
While mild diarrhoea is common and often settles on its own, there are certain situations where you should contact your doctor immediately:
In the meantime:
Your doctor will assess whether the side effects can be managed at home or if you need a change in medication.
Wishing you good health.
