Benefits of using an under-eye cream

  1. It helps reduce the appearance of dark circles to a great extent
  2. It helps deliver hydration to the skin
  3. It can lessen the possibility of fine lines and wrinkles
  4. Eye creams can slow the signs of premature ageing to the skin under the eyes
  5. Puffiness that comes from fluid buildup can be reduced to a great extent with the help of under-eye creams

Points to consider before purchasing an under-eye cream

  1. Dryness

The under-eye area is more prone to dryness than the rest of the face since it is thin and fragile. If the skin around your eyes appears sallow and flaky, you should use a hydrating eye cream. Choose eye creams that contain hyaluronic acid or glycerin to nourish the skin and make it look brighter and plumper.

2. Dark

These are the most frequent eye problems, and the correct eye cream can help alleviate them. To brighten dark circles and alleviate puffiness, look for eye creams that contain peptides or lactic acid.

3. Wrinkles and fine lines

Start with an anti-ageing eye cream that contains retinol or Vitamin E to effectively counteract the signs of age. These components will boost collagen production and elasticity, resulting in a plump and supple skin texture.

4. Fragrance

Eye creams with strong scents can irritate and dry out delicate under-eye skin. Just because something looks indulgent doesn’t mean it always works.

5. Affordability

Eye creams are available at every price point. Expensive doesn’t always mean more effective. Look for eye creams that have the right stuff for your eye goals and the right price tag for your wallet.

How to use an under-eye cream

1. With your ring finger, apply a pea-size amount of product to both eyes.

2. Start at the inner corner underneath your eye, applying small dots in a semi-circle up to your brow bone.

3. Avoid getting too close to your skin as it may cause irritation.

4. After applying your eye cream, wait for about 90 seconds before applying concealer or any other product to give it time to get fully absorbed.

5. It is best to first consult a dermatologist and use the prescribed product based on your skin type.

6. If you notice any redness, rashes, burning or irritation in the area where you have applied the under-eye cream, gently clean the product and consult a doctor.

How To Take Care Of My Hair & Skin During Holi?

Holi is unequivocally the most colourful, vibrant and cheerful festival not just in India but around the globe. Traditionally Holi was celebrated with dry gulal and buckets of water. Unfortunately, today it comes with splashes of synthetic pigments, the after-effects of which not only causes discomfort to our skin, hair, eyes but also can be hazardous to our health. Hence, being a little precautious goes a long way. Along with all the Holi party fun, it’s also important to care for your skin during the celebration. So, before you step out for Holi this year, here are a few things to keep in mind:

Pre Holi Skin & Hair Care Tips:

Oil is your best friend. Apply oil on your face and the exposed parts of the skin or areas of your body that would come in contact with the colour. You can use coconut oil or almond oil, which will help protect your skin from colours. A day before Holi, apply body oil all over your body and massage it into the skin. This not only hydrates your skin but also ensures that less colour is absorbed the next day. In addition, you can also oil your hair to form a protective shield on the strands. Apply oil generously all over the body. Do not forget the smaller areas like the earlobes, nail crevices and skin behind the ears.

Don’ts:

Try to avoid shampooing your hair right after playing Holi. Instead, apply a hair mask and leave it for 45 minutes before shampooing. This will help remove the colours and reduce any damage. Hair oil like almond or coconut is helpful to apply before going out to play.

Dr. Ashish Bajaj, M.B.B.S., M.D.

Do’s:

Use of Natural Colours and PROPER GENTLE TIMELY CLEANSING is very important. Post cleansing adequate moisturization is very important as well.

Dr. M.G. Kartheeka, MBBS, MD

Post Holi Skin & Hair Care Tips:

It’s best to remove colours when it’s wet, as it is difficult to remove them once they’ve dried. Take a shower as soon as you reach home.  Use a gentle face wash and body wash and gently scrub the skin with a loofah to get rid of the color. Use a clarifying shampoo to rinse color from hair. After the shampoo, apply conditioner along with the length of hair. Leave it on for a couple of minutes and rinse with cold water. Use colour protect conditioner for color-treated hair. While removing colors, don’t rub your skin vigorously, this can cause more damage to your skin. Instead, use oil to remove colors gently. After you shower, don’t forget to apply nourishing body lotion and face moisturizer as the skin tends to become dry due to excess colour and sun exposure. If you find your skin breaking out mildly, apply Aloe-Vera gel or Lacto-Calamine lotion which have anti-inflammatory properties that help soothe the skin. Take an anti-allergy medicine, but if the rash doesn’t subside in a day, visit a dermatologist without further delay. Get a facial done only a week after, provided you don’t have any skin trouble or issues.

Protecting your skin and hair during Holi requires you to follow all the pre and post-care tips as well as the do’s and don’ts mentioned above. It’s always a good idea to use more water and flower petals and less colour. If you have to use colour, go organic or use natural colours like haldi, beetroot juice and organic gulal.

Tips For Skin & Hair For Holi By Dr. Poonam Wadhwani

One of the most awaited Indian festivals is right around the corner. With colours and pichkaris, you are waiting to let loose and enjoy the festival of colours. People, from toddlers to oldies, forget their inhibitions and become good sports.   Good-naturedly embrace the spirit of Holi. The after-effects of Holi like allergies, skin reactions and hair fall are not that enjoyable though. Yes, I see you nodding. The chemicals in the colours can harm your body and it’s important to get your gear on to protect yourself.

The chemicals and metals present in the colours today can harm the skin and body. They can have a carcinogenic effect or cause bronchial asthma if inhaled. Organic colours are much safer because they have lesser chemicals and toxins. Of course, herbal colours are the best. Even if we choose to use more eco-friendly and body-friendly colours we still need to protect ourselves from colours that others might use.

Dr Poonam Wadhwani, Cosmetic Dermatologist, shares with us some easy tips on how we can prep our skin and hair before Holi. You don’t need any gear to be allergy-free this Holi.

Things you can apply to save your skin and hair-

  1. Coconut Oil– Coconut oil is available in almost every home. The benefits of coconut oil for medical reasons are innumerable, but for now, we’ll focus on Holi like we need to. Apply the oil gently all over your body. It forms a slippery protective layer and prevents the colours from sticking to your skin and they also wash away more easily later. Apply coconut oil to the roots of your hair as well as the surface to stop it from getting all frizzy.
  2. Moisturiser– Moisturisers and lotions work equally well in protecting the skin. Apply well to make sure your skin absorbs it. Make sure to apply everywhere and I mean everywhere! Don’t forget your fingernails and toenails, earlobes and behind the ears, eyes and the corners of your mouth. If you have acne or are scared of your skin erupting choose moisturizers that are particularly meant for acne-prone skin. This will work better than oil or you can also make homemade acne treatment. Moisturizers that contain paraffin and squalene can help you to avoid infections due to colours. Aloe vera is also the best option for the skin hydrated and moisturized. You can learn more benefits of aloe vera here.
  3. Petroleum Jelly– Good old petroleum jelly is not to be underestimated. It works especially well to protect your lips, ears, nails, fingers and you can even apply it to your neck. Petroleum jelly is the safest measure for anyone, right from kids to adults.
  4. Sunscreen– Holi celebrates the end of winter and the arrival of spring, or summer (in our case). Use sunscreen to protect yourself, especially your face, from the sun. Waterproof sunscreens are a better choice because people also squirt/throw water along with colour.

Care for Your Hair

As mentioned earlier, oil your hair well. That makes it difficult for colours to stick on. Tie your hair in a bun if you have long hair. This will prevent your locks from being exposed to harmful colours and chemicals.

If your hair suffers from split ends or is more prone to split-ends due to the Holi colours, use a strong shampoo to wash it off. Expecting the colour to come off in the first rinse is definitely not possible. Hence, Dr Poonam stresses opting for a strong shampoo to get both the oil and colour off as compared to antiseptic soaps and shampoos. Post shampooing, she advises using hair serums and conditioners to help retain the moisture of the hair.

The post being splattered and smeared with colours, Dr Poonam says it is okay to leave the colours on you for about four to five hours at the most, but if the colours have strong chemicals, it is best to get them off within two hours. You could get skin allergies due to double exposure- chemicals and the hot sun.

As the weather changes, Dr Poonam advises using sunscreen without fail and choosing facewashes instead of soaps. Post Holi, it is super important to continue moisturizing. As summer sets in, skin gets dry and dehydrated due to the climate or sitting in an air-conditioned room and a good moisturizer is an ultimate way of protecting your skin from harm.

These tips should equip you to celebrate Holi without any skin and hair care worries.

Wish you a very happy Holi!
