Is Montek LC Tablet an antibiotic?

I was prescribed Montek LC Tablet for my allergy and cold symptoms, but I’m a bit confused — is Montek LC an antibiotic? It seems to help with sneezing and a runny nose, but I’m not sure if it actually fights infection or just controls the allergy. Can someone explain how it works?

    Dear Reader,

Montek LC Tablet is not an antibiotic. It is a combination medicine used to treat allergy symptoms like sneezing, a runny nose, and watery eyes. Antibiotics are a class of medicines specifically designed to fight bacterial infections. Montek LC, however, works by controlling the body’s reaction to allergens.

Let’s first understand how Montek LC Works:

    • Montek LC contains two active ingredients: Montelukast and Levocetirizine.
    • Levocetirizine is an antihistamine. Allergies cause the body to release a chemical called histamine, which triggers symptoms such as itching, sneezing, and a runny nose. Levocetirizine blocks histamine receptors, providing relief from acute allergy symptoms.
    • Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist. Leukotrienes are another group of chemicals released during an allergic reaction that can cause inflammation and tightening of the airways, especially in asthma or chronic allergies. Montelukast blocks the action of leukotrienes, reducing inflammation and helping to keep the airways open.

In summary, Montek LC works by blocking the chemical pathways (histamine and leukotrienes) that cause allergy and cold symptoms, providing symptomatic relief, but it does not treat or fight a bacterial or viral infection. Always follow your doctor’s instructions regarding its use.
