Please explain how I can prevent tooth decay and cavities.

My dentist said my wisdom tooth needs to be taken out, but I’m a little nervous.  Is wisdom tooth removal a safe procedure?  

My wisdom teeth extraction is planned for next week. I want to understand the food that I will be able to eat after wisdom tooth extraction.
