Dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis is a type of fungal infection that affects the hair and skin, sometimes even the face, especially over the eyebrows and behind the ears. These areas often look red and dry with scaling of the skin.

Ketoconazole (KZ) products are commonly prescribed as a treatment for this condition. In some cases, they can be used in combination with zinc pyrithione or salicylic acid. These ingredients help control the white flakes.

Using oil when you have dandruff is not advisable. Even though the scalp feels dry because of white flakes, dandruff is not related to the dryness of the skin. It is a fungal infection. The lipid base provided by oil can increase the growth of the fungal elements. This means that it might take longer for dandruff to clear if you are using oil.

Dandruff takes time to get treated, and it can even reappear after some time. It is advisable to use prescribed and medicated products only.

Anti-dandruff lotions are of two types. Some of them are overnight solutions. However, lotions with ketoconazole or zinc pyrithione are generally recommended for use, just like shampoos.

After wetting the hair, the lotion has to be applied over the scalp. It is massaged lightly to create a lather. Following this, the product must be allowed to remain on the scalp for about five minutes. After this, you can rinse it well with water.

It is advisable to continue regular maintenance with an anti-dandruff shampoo once a week to prevent a recurrence.

Dandruff is a chronic condition affecting the scalp. It can be seen in people of all ages.

The mainstay of treatment for dandruff is the use of shampoos containing ingredients such as ketoconazole, zinc pyrithione, ciclopirox olamine, selenium sulfide, and others. These ingredients are safe for use in children as well.

The shampoo can be used one or two times a week. If the condition is more severe, additional treatment may be needed in the form of creams and lotions. If your son has had the condition for a long time, it’s best to consult a dermatologist. It might be indicative of a condition known as seborrheic dermatitis that is common in children.

The shampoo must not enter the eyes. If it accidentally comes in contact with the eyes, it is recommended that you rinse them well with water. Also, visit a doctor in case of any discomfort.

It happens because of increased oil production. This oil is called sebum. Increased oil production can also cause redness, irritation, and itching.

The use of anti-dandruff shampoos can be continued. One can use them two or three times a week. However, additional treatment may be required using contents such as salicylic acid or steroid lotions.

A visit to a dermatologist is recommended. This will allow for an accurate diagnosis and complete treatment.

Seborrheic dermatitis or dandruff is a chronic condition of the scalp. It can result in inflamed skin due to a collection of white blood cells and other inflammatory cells. The prescribed treatment for it may continue from a few weeks to several years.

In simple terms, Seborrheic dermatitis is a fungal infection, and antifungal creams and shampoos with ingredients such as ketoconazole, zinc pyrithrione, or selenium sulfide are generally the treatment prescribed.

Seborrheic dermatitis can present as burning or irritation of the scalp. There may be redness of the skin, severe dryness, and yellow, greasy scales.

A topical steroid cream may be prescribed when the disease is active, and there are severe symptoms. However, these steroid creams should not be used for long as they can cause side effects with continued use. Therefore, after initial use, you can continue treatment with antifungal products or other steroid-sparing creams.

In your case, it is better to consult the dermatologist who can evaluate the present condition and advise you on continuing or changing the prescribed lotion.

Dandruff is a condition that takes about four to six weeks to get cleared.

Most anti-dandruff shampoos are prescribed for use two or three times a week during active treatment. After that, you can continue them once a week for maintenance.

Lotions with ketoconazole and salicylic acid can cause increased dryness if used daily. The products should only be used as frequently as advised by the doctor.

Using more quantities or applying products more often than prescribed does not make them more effective. It increases the chances of side effects due to overuse.

Lotions for dandruff should not be left on the scalp. They have to be washed off after application to ensure effective treatment. If the product is left on for too long, it can weaken the hair.

Even in the case of continued and regular use of the product, sometimes there may not be a complete response. In these cases, your dermatologist may prescribe an additional product.
