Considering your medical history, family history and any other deficiency before starting any diet plan can be helpful. You should consult a dietician or healthcare provider for a good diet plan.

There are many food options that will make up for your daily nutritional needs without causing any undesirable spikes in glucose levels. Here are a few tips for you:

    • Dividing your meals into two to three portions will help your body make better use of the available insulin.
    • Avoid sweets and sugar because they are high in calories.
    • Avoid foods rich in saturated fats (ghee, butter), cholesterol (fried foods) and sodium (all packed and preserved foods like chips, farsan, biscuits, etc.) as they increase the chances of developing heart diseases and stroke.
    • Eating meals rich in nutrients but low fats and sugars can be a good option e.g., home cooked meals instead of ready to eat options, grilled or baked meals instead of fried ones, etc.
    • Including whole grains like brown rice, millets, oats and barley and vegetables will give you a balanced diet.
    • Vegetables contain many vitamins and fibres that will keep you fuller.

It is important to understand that type 1 diabetes is a condition where the body cannot produce enough insulin and hence there is a lifelong need for insulin injections to manage the condition. Regular monitoring of blood sugar and routine health checkups with a diabetologist is important. You must consult your child’s doctor before giving any herbal or alternative medicine because these medicines might cause some fluctuations in blood sugar levels when taken along with the ongoing treatment for type 1 diabetes.

I would also recommend you to consult an ayurvedic doctor for treatment of type 1 diabetes and appropriate dosage for your son. They will be a more appropriate authority to answer about its use in children and its safety and effectiveness for type 1 diabetes.

Different types of insulins are needed in type 1 diabetes for 24-hour control of sugar. The choice of insulins in a patient is individualised according to the patient’s needs. These days many types of insulins are used to treat Type 1 diabetes. Some of them are similar to natural insulins in their actions, while others (newer insulins) act either faster or slower than the natural insulin.

Lantus is long-acting insulin and acts slowly. It is basal insulin that can be taken at any time of the day, regardless of the food intake. It is usually injected only once every day. But, taking the injection at the same time every day can be better.

It would be best if you took Lantus injections exactly as advised by your doctor. Your doctor might have advised you to take Lantus injections in the morning instead of at night based on your sugar readings patterns.

A person who has Type 1 diabetes may be prescribed one or more types of insulin. There are multiple types of insulin available, which includes:

Rapid-acting insulin: This type of insulin starts working within 15 minutes after injection. Insulin Lispro, Aspart and Glulisine are examples of rapid-acting insulin.

Short-acting insulin: This insulin shows its action roughly 30 minutes after injection. Humulin R is an example of short-acting insulin.

Intermediate-acting insulin: This type of insulin starts action after 1 to 3 hours and lasts for 12 to 24 hours. An example of intermediate-acting insulin is Humulin N.

Long and ultra-long acting insulin: This type of insulin may provide a basal cover for as long as 15 to 40 hours.

Examples; Insulin Glargine, Insulin Detemir and Degludec.

You can consult your doctor to chart out the best-personalised plan for managing your diabetes. Usually, doctors may prescribe a combination of long or ultra-long and rapid or short-acting insulin.

It is essential to stick to the dosing schedule prescribed by your doctor. Also, it is essential to follow a diet and exercise plan for better benefits of the therapy.

There are several options for insulin delivery:

    1. Fine needle and syringe, or
    2. Insulin pen with a fine needle, or
    3. Insulin pump

For a patient at a high-risk Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (PDR) stage, generally, you have to select from two options depending on the condition of the retina – Laser and Vitrectomy surgery.

Proliferative diabetic retinopathy is a very serious condition and can affect her vision severely. Therefore, it is advised not to rely on any medicines that are not scientifically backed and opt for immediate treatment with proper consultation.

It is an advanced stage of retinopathy where high blood sugar levels cause damage to blood vessels in the retina.

Generally, a surgery called vitrectomy is recommended if there are severe complications like bleeding in the ocular gel (vitreous haemorrhage) for more than one month, retinal swelling that does not resolve the presence of scar tissue. Consult your retina expert ophthalmologist and diabetologist as to which one is most suitable for your mother.

Exercise is an essential part of managing Type 1 diabetes. It helps keep a check on blood sugar levels and improve the overall quality of life.
Yoga is a combination of specific postures, breathing exercises, and meditation. It is a form of resistance exercise, which may help regulate the blood cholesterol levels in the body. Doing yoga is said to be beneficial for everyone including people with diabetes. Some research also shows that yoga can help improve the overall quality of life. It also helps in the management of symptoms related to diabetes. However, it is not a cure.
