What are mosquito repellents used for?

A mosquito repellent is a substance put on skin, clothing, or other surfaces which discourages mosquitoes from landing or crawling on that surface. Mosquitoes are responsible for the spread of diseases like malaria, dengue and chikungunea. Mosquito repellents play an important role in reducing the risk of mosquito bites. oil of lemon eucalyptus etc has been found to provide as much protection as low concentrations of DEET when tested against mosquitoes found in the United States. DEET is shorthand for the chemical N, N-diethyl-meta-toluamide, the active ingredient in many insect repellents.

Types of mosquito repellents:

  • Mosquito Repellent Vaporizer Machine - The machines usually have liquid repellent enclosed in a plastic bottle, the liquid is a mixture of chemicals that may primarily include transfluthrin, a stabilizer (Butlyated hydroxytoluene BHT in this case) and a perfume. Lotion or Cream Repellents - These types of repellents are most in use. These repellents can be applied to the skin or clothes to avoid mosquito bites. These repellents use a combination of oils and herbal substances like citronella, neem, aloe vera, vitamin E, eucalyptus oil, almond oil etc to keep away mosquitoes.
  • Sprays and coils - The use of mosquito coils has gained widespread patronage in malaria-endemic countries. Mosquito coils contain insecticides, which are expected to vaporize slowly once the coil is lit, to provide protection against the mosquito. The mosquito coil base material contains a variety of compounds capable of burning slowly to gradually release the fumes. These are used in open areas like gardens, and terraces more commonly.
  • Natural mosquito repellents- People are usually prone to mosquito bites due to a combination of scent, light, heat, and humidity. Thus people who are allergic to chemical-based mosquito repellents can use oils that also prevent mosquito bites. Lemon eucalyptus oil, lavender oil, cinnamon oil, thyme oil, tea tree oils etc are said to be the best natural mosquito repellents.
