Mode of Action
How Does It Work?
- Metrogyl DG Forte gel is a combination of two active ingredients - metronidazole and chlorhexidine.
- Metronidazole is an antibiotic that acts by altering the bacteria growth and undergoes certain changes that make it cytotoxic to the bacteria (capable of destroying the bacteria). It also interacts with the genetic material of bacteria and prevents bacterial multiplication. Thus, this stops the further growth of bacteria and kills the bacteria causing the mouth infection.
- Chlorhexidine causes a change in the structure of the cell membrane of bacteria and fungi. This change in the cell membrane causes a number of membrane abnormalities causing leakage of the components of the cell leading to cell death. This stops the further growth of the bacteria and fungi and treats the infections of the mouth.
Interactions
Interactions with other medicines

- Care should be taken when using Metrogyl DG Forte gel along with coumarin anticoagulants (warfarin) as the activity of the anticoagulant in the body is increased.
- Taking disulfiram while using Metrogyl DG Forte gel can cause confusion.
