A troponin test is usually done to find out if someone has had a heart attack, which damages the heart muscle. Usually, troponin is untraceable, if the heart muscle is damaged, troponin is detected in the blood. Doctors recommend this test only if someone shows chest pain and other symptoms of a heart attack.

A heart attack usually occurs when a blood clot blocks the blood flow to the heart. Blood carries oxygen. So the lack of oxygen in the heart muscle causes the muscle cells to die and release troponin. The more severe the damage, the higher the troponin levels.
