A quick info on Urine Culture test

A quick info on Urine Culture test

Overview

Overview

A urine culture and sensitivity test (urine C/S) helps identify harmful bacteria or fungi that cause urinary tract infections. These can be detected by collecting a urine sample and observing it in a lab for 24 - 48 hours to check for bacterial growth. Once the organism is detected, antibiotic sensitivity testing is done. It helps confirm which antibiotics are effective against UTI-causing microorganisms, helping guide a treatment plan.

When and Who Should Get Urine Culture Test Done?

When and Who Should Get Urine Culture Test Done?

A urine culture test is usually recommended for those with signs of UTIs or those in higher-risk groups.

Signs and Symptoms of UTIs

  • Burning pain during urination
  • Frequent urge to urinate
  • Blood in the urine
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Lower back pain
  • Fever or chills

Higher-risk Groups for UTIs

  • Anyone with recurrent UTIs
  • Pregnant women
  • Anyone with kidney stones
  • Patients using a urinary catheter
  • Immunocompromised patients
  • Patients undergoing any urological procedures, such as ureterectomy or prostate surgery

Important note: A urine culture test should not be considered if signs such as foul odour, cloudy or dark-coloured urine are present alone, without any UTI symptoms (burning, urgency, pain, or fever) unless you are pregnant.

What Conditions Can Urine Culture Test Help Detect?

What Conditions Can Urine Culture Test Help Detect?

The urine culture test helps detect a wide range of urinary tract infections, such as:

  • UTIs: urinary tract infections affecting the bladder (cystitis) or urethra (urethritis).
  • Pyelonephritis: kidney infection with fever, chills, flank or back pain.
  • Recurrent UTIs: repeated urinary tract infections every few months.
  • Complicated UTIs: UTIs with complicated factors such as urinary tract abnormalities, kidney stones, or a weak immune system.
  • Asymptomatic bacteriuria: the presence of bacteria in urine without any symptoms, requires treatment only for pregnant women.
  • Catheter-associated UTI: UTIs caused by catheter use.
  • Fungal UTIs: UTIs caused by fungal growth, especially in uncontrolled sugar patients.
Urine Culture Test Preparation

Urine Culture Test Preparation

What to Expect Before the Test

  • Fasting is usually not required before the test.
  • Drink a glass of water 20 - 30 minutes before the test.
  • Do not urinate for an hour before the test.
  • Do not take antibiotics before the test.

What to Expect During the Urine Sample Collection

A midstream clean-catch urine sample is required for the test. The steps for the collection of the same are as follows:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
  • Clean the genital area with an antiseptic wipe.
  • Open the lid of the sterile container with clean hands and avoid touching the inside.
  • Let the first few drops of urine fall into the toilet, then start urinating midstream directly into the container, without touching the container to the skin.
  • Close the lid and hand it to a lab technician, or send the kit to the lab within two hours.

What to Expect After the Test

  • The test procedure is completely safe and painless.
  • The sample is sent to the lab for culture and testing, and observed for 24 - 48 hours.
What Are the Parameters Included in the Test?

What Are the Parameters Included in the Test?

The test parameters for urine culture and sensitivity include information on the disease-causing microorganism, its growth rate, and sensitivity testing against different antibiotics. The test parameters are explained below:

  • Bacterial growth: checks for growth of bacteria in the urine sample after 24 - 48 hours in the lab.
  • Colony count: measures the number of bacteria in the sample to detect infection.
  • Organism identified: detects the presence of specific bacteria or fungi causing UTI detected.
  • Antibiotic sensitivity: checks which antibiotics are effective against the infecting bacteria and which are not.
Normal Ranges of Urine Culture Test Parameters

Normal Ranges of Urine Culture Test Parameters

To learn about what normal test results of a urine culture test look like on a lab report, refer to the table below:

Parameter

Normal (expected) result

Bacterial growth

No growth (sterile urine)

Colony count

Less than 10,000 CFU/mL (likely contamination, no infection)

Organism identified

None

Antibiotic sensitivity

N/A (no growth)

Important note: Test results may vary from lab to lab. Always consult your healthcare provider and refer to the interpretation notes on your lab report.

Urine Culture Test Result Interpretation

Urine Culture Test Result Interpretation

Urine culture and sensitivity test result interpretation depends on your symptoms, medical history, and test results. The table below provides a comprehensive view of what your urine culture test results can mean:

Result

Interpretation

No growth (negative)

No bacteria detected. A urinary tract infection is less likely.

Growth above 100,000 CFU/mL

Significant bacterial infection confirmed—true UTI when symptoms are present.

Growth 10,000 - 100,000 CFU/mL

Borderline - may represent early or partially treated infection, or contamination.

Growth below 10,000 CFU/mL

Very low count - usually indicates sample contamination.

Mixed growth (multiple organisms)

Usually indicate contamination and may require repeat testing.

Organism identified

A specific bacterium or fungus causing infection has been detected.

If the organism is identified, antibiotic sensitivity testing is done. The results of the antibiotic sensitivity test can be interpreted as follows:

Antibiotic sensitivity result

Interpretation

Sensitive

The antibiotic is likely to be effective against the organism.

Intermediate

The antibiotic may be effective in certain situations or at higher doses.

Resistant

The organism is resistant to antibiotics and will not respond to them.

Disclaimer: The above information is for educational purposes only. Interpretation of the urine culture test should always be done under an expert’s guidance based on your clinical symptoms and medical history. Always consult a healthcare professional to understand your test results better.

People Also Ask

What micro-organisms cause UTIs?

The UTI-causing micro-organisms include bacterial species such as E. coli (most common), Klebsiella, Staphylococcus aureus, and Enterococcus, as well as fungal species such as Candida, that can be detected using a urine culture test.

What do sensitive and resistant mean in test results?

Sensitive means the disease-causing micro-organism is sensitive to a particular antibiotic and can’t grow in its presence; resistant means the antibiotic has no effect on the organism, and it can grow in the lab and in the body.

What is mixed growth referred to as?

‘Mixed growth’ refers to contamination of the urine sample with different types of micro-organisms. This happens due to contamination through the skin of the genital area or if the sample isn’t sent to the lab in time.

Can a urine culture test help detect STDs?

No, a urine culture test is not indicated for the detection of sexually transmitted infections; other tests should be considered.

Is the presence of WBCs or pus in urine indicative of UTIs?

The presence of pus alone without any other symptoms indicates recently treated UTIs, STIs, malignancy, autoimmune disorders, or other infections. It does not indicate an active urinary tract infection.
