Urine is a waste product of the body. A urine culture is done in a laboratory, where growth promoting substances are added to the urine sample. If bacteria or yeast are present they start to multiply. This growth indicates that the person has a urinary tract infection.

Urinary tract infection is caused by microorganisms, usually a bacteria called Escherichia coli or E. coli. E. coli normally lives in the intestines of healthy people without causing any harm. These bacteria often remain present around the anus after passing stool. If somehow trace amounts of the faecal matter come into contact with the urethra opening, E. coli enters the urinary tract. It multiplies there causing urinary tract infection. The infection can occur at different points of the urinary tract, including bladder, kidneys, ureters, and urethra.

Some measures to prevent UTI:

• Gently wipe from front to back after urination and bowel movement that keeps bacteria away from the urethra.
