Overview
AMH is a substance which is produced by granulosa cells in ovarian follicles. Its production is generally higher in preantral and small antral stages of development. But as the follicles grow, the production slowly decreases and then stops. Therefore, the levels are fairly constant and the AMH test can be done on any day of a woman’s cycle. It also plays different roles in males and females. The normal levels of AMH may vary too, depending on the age and sex. If you're between 20-24 and a female, the median AMH levels are going to be 6.23. But in the case of males, AMH levels above 4.0 ng/ML are going to be considered high.
In case you want to go for an in vitro fertilization, doing an AMH test will become necessary. Women with higher AMH values will tend to have better responses to ovarian stimulation for IVF. It means that they will have more eggs retrieved, thus increasing the chances of success rate as well. We have already talked about how the AMH test is not an accurate judge of egg quality. However, most of the experts believe that high AMH levels correlate with low cancellation rates. Also if a woman is below 35, low AMH levels won't predict low IVF success rates either.
Test Necessity
You may need an AMH test for any of the following reasons:
- In case you have fertility issues, you should consider doing an AMH test. It will help you find out if your egg supply is normal for your age. It will also help in planning in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment.
- The symptoms of PCOS like irregular menstrual periods, acne, weight gain, and hair loss will call for an AMH test as well.
- If you're being treated for certain types of ovarian cancer. The test will let you know if the treatment is working or not.
Test Preparation
No fasting is required to prepare for the AMH test. There are no special preparations for an AMH test anyway.
During the AMH Test
The experienced phlebotomist will use a syringe to draw a small amount of blood and put it into a collection tube. To comfortably locate your vein, a vein finder will be used. The safety of the procedure will be given topmost priority to bring out accurate results later on. The blood sample will be sent to PharmEasy labs for scrutiny.
