Glucose is a type of sugar that we get from our food. Our body breaks down carbohydrates into glucose, which enters the blood. All cells in the body collect sugar from the blood to use as fuel and energy. Insulin, a hormone, helps glucose to enter the cells. Glucose binds to haemoglobin, the protein of red blood cells. These glycated haemoglobin are HbA1c.

People with diabetes either don't produce enough insulin or their cells can't process insulin properly, so glucose cannot get into the cells, stays in the blood causing blood sugar to increase.

As blood sugar increases, so does the amount of HbA1c (glucose coated haemoglobin)levels. Each red blood cell lives roughly for two to three months. Glucose sticks to haemoglobin for as long as the red blood cells are alive. Hence an HbA1c test measures the percentage of HbA1c in the blood over the last few months.
