TOXOPLASMA IGM

About the test
What is this test done for?
Toxoplasma IgM is a blood test used for detecting antibodies against Toxoplasma gondii, a parasite that causes toxoplasmosis infection.
Why is it Done?

This is a special blood test done for diagnosing toxoplasmosis. Presence of toxoplasma IgM in the blood indicates recent infection of Toxoplasma gondii.

It is done in

  • Pregnant woman, if she presents with symptoms of toxoplasmosis
  • In newborns
  • In HIV infected patients with weakened immunity
When should it be performed?

This test is performed

  • If a patient is immunocompromised (has weakened immunity) has symptoms of toxoplasmosis
    • Flu-like symptoms (cough and cold)
    • Swollen lymph nodes
    • Fever with night sweats
    • Weakness
    • Fatigue
    • Headache
    • Body ache
    • Sore throat
  • Usually ordered during pregnancy, if a female presents with aforementioned symptoms, as toxoplasmosis can cause damage to the brain of baby and can cause blindness
How is it done
A blood sample will be collected from a vein in your arm. No special preparations like fasting required.
Results
  • The test result is normal or negative; if the report reads toxoplasma IgM antibodies are absent. It means no infection of Toxoplasmo gondii.
  • The test result is positive; if report reads toxoplasma IgM antibodies are present. It means Toxoplasmosis infection.
  • Toxoplasma IgM has a high false positive rate, as it is not a routine test. To confirm toxoplasmosis, it is advised to repeat the test from a standard reference lab.
  • Since the infection is more common amongst immunocompromised patients i.e. patients with low immunity, probabilities of IgM being negative is also high or it can be weakly positive, even if symptoms strongly suggest toxoplasmosis.
Other Tests
  • TORCH panel
    • It tests for toxoplasmosis, rubella, cytomegalovirus and herpes simplex virus
    • Positive results for any of the above indicate infection by that parasite or bacteria or virus
  • T. gondii DNA
    • Positive results indicate toxoplasmosis infection
  • Toxoplasma IgM in amniotic fluid
    • It is a specialized test that detects toxoplasma IgM in the amniotic fluid, of a pregnant mother
    • Positive results indicate toxoplamosis in fetus
