What is this test done for?
AST or SGOT is one of the primary screening blood tests for any liver diseases.
Why is it Done?
AST is found in many tissues throughout the body, including the liver, heart, muscles, kidney, and brain. The test is done to determine the normal functioning of the liver in cases of suspected liver damage due to cirrhosis, drugs, medicines, hepatitis infections, etc.
When should it be performed?

If there are following symptoms or conditions then SGOT test is performed:

  • Fever
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Dark colored urine
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Yellowness of eyes, fingers or skin.
  • To monitor liver condition when on medicines that affect liver e.g.. anti epilepsy medicines
  • To diagnose hepatitis infection
  • To diagnose any liver damage e.g. cirrhosis, fatty liver
How is it done
You need to fast for 12 hours overnight before giving a blood sample from your arm the next morning.
  • Normal for males is 14 to 20U/L, females is 10 to 36U/L
  • There are many conditions when the levels go high like: Liver diseases- hepatitis or cirrhosis, heart failure, certain medications, high doses of Vitamin A, certain strenuous exercises.
  • Normal levels mean the liver and other organs are functioning normally.
Other Tests
For confirmation of diagnosis, tests like ultrasonography and liver function tests are performed. A common test CBC may also be ordered.
