About the test
What is this test done for?
Insulin post lunch is a specialized blood test that measures the amount of insulin levels in the blood, evaluated 2 hours after meals. Insulin is a hormone released in the blood that helps absorption of glucose by body cells.
Why is it Done?

This is a specialized blood test, done for evaluating insulin levels in the blood 2 hours after meals.

It helps in

  • Diagnosing insulin resistance
  • Diagnosing insulinoma
  • Determining type 1 diabetes
  • Determining the role of insulin to control blood sugar for type 2 diabetics
  • Monitoring efficacy of diabetes therapy
When should it be performed?

This test is performed

  • If a patient has signs and symptoms of insulin resistance
    • Weight gain
    • Lethargy
    • Hunger
    • Black discoloration and skin thickening around neck (acanthosis nigricans)
    • Brain fag or difficulty in concentrating
    • High blood pressure
    • Increased cholesterol levels
  • If a patient is a known case of poly cystic ovarian disease, the test helps in ruling out insulin resistance
  • If a patient is a known diabetic for more than 10 years and on medication, yet blood glucose levels remain high, then the test helps in determining the insulin levels and patient may require insulin therapy for controlling blood glucose
  • If a patient has metabolic syndrome (combination of blood pressure, diabetes and obesity)
How is it done
A blood sample will be collected from a vein in your arm. Blood is collected 2 hours after intake meals.

The test result is normal, if insulin level is 16-166 mIU/L. It means

  • No insulin resistance
  • In case of type 2 diabetic patient, only oral medication is sufficient to manage blood glucose levels, no external insulin required for its management

The test results are high, if insulin level is above 175 mIU/L. It means

  • Insulin resistance
  • Insulinoma
  • Morbid obesity
  • Early phase of type 2 diabetes
  • Acromegaly
  • Cushing syndrome

The test results are falsely positive or high, if a patient is on drugs such as levodopa, corticosteroids or oral contraceptives.

Other Tests
  • Blood Sugar Fasting & Post lunch
    • It is a routine blood test carried out to evaluate blood sugar levels
    • High blood sugar in both fasting and post lunch help in diagnosing diabetes
  • C-peptide
    • It is a specialized blood test carried out to evaluate the amount of c-peptide levels of the blood
