What is this test done for?
This blood test is to detect protein HLAB27 on the surface of white blood corpuscle. HLA B 27 stands for Human Leukocyte Antigen type B 27.
Why is it Done?

HLAB27 protein helps the body immune system to differentiate between its own cells & foreign harmful substances.

  • To check whether there is risk of developing auto immune diseases as Ankylosing spondylitis, reactive arthritis.
  • To confirm the suspected diagnosis of Ankylosing spondylitis, reactive arthritis & juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.
When should it be performed?

When the patient presents with :

  • Acute or chronic pain & inflammation in the spine, neck, chest, eyes & joints, looking like an autoimmune disorder.
  • Patient has recurrent uveitis in the eye.
How is it done
A blood sample will be collected from a vein in your arm. Fasting is not required prior to sample collection.

This is not a diagnostic test, but supportive test. Results are seen within 3 to 4 days. It can be either negative or positive.

  • If negative, then it does not rule out autoimmune disease.
  • If positive, then with clinical correlation & X-rays , underlying diagnosis of exact autoimmune disorder can be made. Other tests like ANA, ASMA, etc. will have to be edited.
Other Tests
ESR, C Reactive protein, RA factor needs to be done to confirm the exact diagnosis.
