What is this test done for?
DHT or Dihydrotestosterone is a blood test that measures the amount of a hormone i.e. testosterone or dihydrotestosterone.
Why is it Done?

This is a specialized blood test for DHT levels in blood and is done for

  • Evaluating patients with enzyme 5 α-reductase deficiency
  • Evaluating patients with prostate disease
  • Monitoring patients who are on chemotherapy for prostate disease
When should it be performed?

This test is performed when a patient has

  • Symptoms of prostate disease
    • Burning while passing urine
    • Difficulty in passing urine
    • Increased frequency of urination (especially at night or while lying down)
    • Poor flow of urine and dribbling of urine
    • Passing of blood in urine
    • Difficulty in getting erection
    • Blood in semen
    • Painful ejaculation
  • Prostate disease and is undergoing chemotherapy receiving 5 alpha-reductase inhibitor
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Prolonged uncontrolled hair fall
How is it done
A blood sample will be collected from a vein in your arm. No special preparations like fasting required.

The test result is normal, if levels are 240-650 pg/L (for males) and ≤ 300 pg/L (for females). It means

  • Normal functioning of prostate and absence of prostate disease
  • Good response to chemotherapy for prostate disease
  • Hair fall is due to other infective or micronutrient deficiency

The levels of DHT are high, if it is > 920 pg/L. It means

  • Hair loss in men and women
  • Prostate disease
  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BHP)

The levels of DHT are low, if it is < 200 pg/L. It means

  • Patient is on chemotherapy (5 alpha-reductase inhibitor) for prostate disease
  • Genetic deficiency of 5 alph-reductase
  • Low libido and erectile dysfunction

    • It is a specialized blood test carried out to evaluate testosterone levels of blood
    • Low testosterone levels indicate poor libido
    • High testosterone levels indicate male type baldness in men and women
  • Prostate specific antigen (PSA)
    • It is a specialized blood test carried out to evaluate PSA levels of the blood
    • High levels of PSA indicate prostate disease
    • Very high level of PSA may suggest prostate cancer
