About the test
What is this test done for?
Cardiolipin IgG or anticardiolipin IgG is a blood test done for detecting presence of antibodies in the blood that help in diagnosing antiphospholipid syndrome.
Why is it Done?

This is a specialized test done for diagnosing antiphospholipid syndrome.

Anticardiolipin antibodies found in blood help in determining the cause of

  • Unexplained blood clot formation, inside an artery or vein (thrombotic episode)
  • Prolonged PTT or increased PT(INR)
  • Recurrent miscarriages
When should it be performed?

This test is performed

  • If a patient presents with signs and symptoms of a blood clot in an intact artery or vein (thrombotic episode); signs and symptoms vary as per the location of the blood clot
    • If it is in leg (DVT or deep vein thrombosis)
      • Severe leg pain, usually of one leg
      • Swelling of the affected leg
      • Purplish or bluish discoloration of the affected leg
    • If it is in lungs (pulmonary embolism)
      • Shortness of breath, which is sudden onset
      • Difficulty in breathing, labored breathing
      • Cough with bloody sputum
      • Increased heart rate
      • Lung-related chest pain
  • If a female complaints of repeated miscarriages (below 10 weeks of pregnancy) and has abnormal PTT or PT (INR)
  • If a patient has autoimmune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus etc
How is it done
Venous blood sample is collected from vein at any time of the day, without any fasting.

Negative, if levels are  below 20 GPL units/mL

  • Absence of antiphospholipid syndrome

Weakly Positive, if levels are 20 - 80 GPL units/mL

  • Possibility of antiphospholipid syndrome

Strongly positive, if levels are above 80 GPL units/mL

  • Antiphospholipid syndrome
Other Tests
  • Cardiolipin IgM
    • Positive results indicate antiphospholipid syndrome
  • Antiphospholipid antibodies
    • Positive test indicate autoimmune disorders
  • aPTT
    • Increased time indicate bleeding disorders
  • Lupus anticoagulant testing
    • Positive results indicate abnormal clotting
