Blood group or blood typing is a routine blood test that determines the blood group of a person.
Why is it Done?
This is a routine blood test that checks the blood group of a person.The test is done for
  • Identifying the blood group of a person, before
    • Blood transfusion (for compatibility)
    • Blood donation
    • Organ transplant (donors and recipients both)
  • Determining the blood group of a pregnant woman and her developing baby during pregnancy to avoid fetal incompatibility (resulting in spontaneous abortion)
When should it be performed?
This test is performed
  • In patients, who are undergoing
    • Any major surgeries, which involves blood loss and requires blood transfusion
    • Emergency surgery or emergency admission and requiring blood due to blood loss caused by accident or trauma
    • Organ transplantation to check for compatibility
  • In donors, who are
    • Donating blood (usually for the first time, when they are unaware about their blood group)
    • Donating organs
  • In pregnant women to check for Rh compatibility, for avoiding spontaneous abortion due to Rh incompatibility or condition called as erythroblastosis fetalis or avoid complications in new born (hemolytic disease of the fetus and new born)
  • As a routine screening test for knowing one’s blood group
How is it done
A blood sample will be collected from a vein in your arm. No special precautions required like fasting.
Results
The results determine whether a person’s blood group is A, B, AB, or O and Rh positive or negative. The table below shows compatibility of blood types between donors and recipients.
  • Compatible blood group for A –ve: A –ve & O –ve
  • Compatible blood group for A +ve: A +ve, A –ve, O +ve & O –ve
  • Compatible blood group for B –ve: B –ve & O –ve
  • Compatible blood group for B +ve: B +ve, B –ve, O +ve & O –ve
  • Compatible blood group for AB –ve: AB –ve & O –ve
  • Compatible blood group for AB +ve: AB –ve, AB +ve, A –ve, A +ve, B –ve, B +ve, O –ve & O +ve
  • Compatible blood group for O –ve: O –ve
  • Compatible blood group for O +ve: O –ve & O +ve
