This type of itching during pregnancy is very common. It usually happens when your skin stretches around your growing baby<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/pregnancy\/complications\/itching-and-intrahepatic-cholestasis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">3<\/a><\/sup>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, body itching during pregnancy\u200b can also be linked to hormonal changes, pre-existing skin conditions, or pregnancy-specific conditions like intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP)<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK560820\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">1<\/a><\/sup>. This includes ICP, which is a liver condition that causes intense itching (often in palms and soles) without a rash. This condition often worsens at night and needs immediate medical attention. Other conditions include atopic eruption of pregnancy (an itchy skin condition that can cause bumps or rashes), polymorphic eruption of pregnancy (an itchy rash that usually develops on the abdomen), pustular psoriasis of pregnancy (a rare form of psoriasis that causes pus-filled bumps and red patches), and pemphigoid gestationis (a rare autoimmune condition that can cause severe itching and blisters).\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Other health conditions:<\/strong> Itching may sometimes be linked to conditions affecting the liver, kidneys, thyroid, or blood, as well as diabetes, infections, medication reactions, or other underlying conditions.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Symptoms_of_Itching_During_Pregnancy\"><\/span><strong>Symptoms of Itching During Pregnancy<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You may notice itching in whole body during pregnancy,\u200b or itching on different parts of your body. However, some pregnancy-specific conditions that cause itching may affect your health or your baby\u2019s health. These include<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK560820\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">1<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pregnancybirthbaby.org.au\/pregnancy\/health-conditions-and-complications\/itching-during-pregnancy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">4<\/a><\/sup>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>ICP:<\/strong> This condition can increase the risk of foetal distress, preterm labour, stillbirth, and admission to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pemphigoid gestationis:<\/strong> This rare condition can increase the risk of preterm labour, having a baby who is small for their gestational age, and stillbirth. Your baby may also develop blisters (these usually go away on their own).\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Note:<\/strong> Any possible complications depend on the underlying cause of the itching. This is why you should always consult a doctor for persistent or severe itching during pregnancy.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Diagnosis_of_Itching_During_Pregnancy\"><\/span><strong>Diagnosis<\/strong> <strong>of Itching During Pregnancy<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your doctor will first examine your skin and ask about your symptoms. This may include where the itching occurs, when it started, and what makes it better or worse. They may also check your skin for any rash or any other changes. And if needed, a skin biopsy (a small sample of skin examined under a microscope) may be done to identify the cause of an itchy rash<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK560820\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">1<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pregnancybirthbaby.org.au\/pregnancy\/health-conditions-and-complications\/itching-during-pregnancy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">4<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on your symptoms and the suspected cause, blood tests (such as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pharmeasy.in\/diagnostics\/profile\/liver-function-test-lft-254\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">liver function tests<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pharmeasy.in\/diagnostics\/profile\/complete-blood-count-cbc-408\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">complete blood count<\/a><\/strong>, basic metabolic panel, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pharmeasy.in\/diagnostics\/tests\/tsh-ultrasensitive-828\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">thyroid-stimulating hormone<\/a><\/strong>, etc.) may be needed. If ICP is suspected, your doctor may recommend blood tests such as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pharmeasy.in\/diagnostics\/tests\/bile-acid-28\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">serum bile acid levels<\/a><\/strong><sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK560820\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">1<\/a><\/sup>.
