If it is not found and treated early, it can grow into nearby tissues and may spread to other parts of the body<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/001035.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">1<\/a><\/sup>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following are some facts about mouth cancer:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Mouth cancer is a type of head and neck cancer<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/oralcancer.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">3<\/a><\/sup>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tobacco and smoking are among the major\u00a0avoidable\u00a0causes of oral cancer.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In India, men\u00a0(especially\u00a0those\u00a0older than 40) are\u00a0more than\u00a0twice as likely to get mouth cancer as\u00a0women<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/38425965\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u00b9\u2079<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Types_of_Mouth_Cancer\"><\/span><strong>Types of Mouth Cancer<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mouth cancers can\u00a0originate\u00a0from\u00a0different types\u00a0of cells or tissues. Common\u00a0types\u00a0include:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Squamous\u00a0cell carcinoma:\u00a0<\/strong>This is the most common type of mouth cancer. It starts in\u00a0squamous cells (thin, flat cells that line the\u00a0mouth,\u00a0lips,\u00a0and\u00a0tongue).\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Verrucous carcinoma:\u00a0<\/strong>This is a rare form of squamous cell carcinoma. It\u00a0looks like a wart,\u00a0usually grows slowly and is less likely to spread than many other mouth cancers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Salivary gland cancer:<\/strong>\u00a0These cancers begin in the small salivary glands (glands that make saliva) found in the lining of the\u00a0mouth\u00a0.\u00a0Examples include mucoepidermoid carcinoma (a cancer that may develop from mucus-producing cells) and adenoid cystic carcinoma (a cancer that can develop in salivary glands and may spread along nearby nerves).\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lymphoma:<\/strong>\u00a0Lymphoma is cancer of the lymphatic system (the body\u2019s network of infection-fighting cells and vessels). In the mouth and throat, it may affect lymph tissue around the tonsils or the base of the tongue. Swollen lymph nodes (small immune\u00a0system glands, often felt as lumps in the neck) can be a sign<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancerresearchuk.org\/about-cancer\/mouth-cancer\/stages-types-grades\/types-grades\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">4<\/a><\/sup>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Melanoma:<\/strong>\u00a0Oral melanoma is uncommon\u00a0but aggressive. It starts in melanocytes (cells that produce pigment, which gives colour to skin and some tissues)<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancerresearchuk.org\/about-cancer\/mouth-cancer\/stages-types-grades\/types-grades\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">4<\/a><\/sup>.\u00a0It may appear as\u00a0a dark brown\u00a0or black patch, flat spot, or raised lump. It may also\u00a0contain\u00a0grey, red, or purple areas, or areas where the usual tissue colour is lost<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK513276\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">5<\/a><\/sup>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sarcoma:<\/strong>\u00a0Sarcoma is cancer that starts in connective tissue, such as muscle, bone, fat, or blood vessels.
