It\u00a0can happen\u00a0when bacteria move from\u00a0the\u00a0vagina to\u00a0the\u00a0upper reproductive organs, such as the\u00a0uterus, fallopian tubes, or ovaries<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/000888.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">5<\/a><\/sup>.\u00a0Chlamydia and\u00a0gonorrhoea\u00a0are\u00a0common\u00a0STI-related causes of PID<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/000888.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">5<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/9111185\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">6<\/a><\/sup>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ectopic Pregnancy:<\/strong>\u00a0An ectopic pregnancy happens when\u00a0a\u00a0fertilised\u00a0egg grows\u00a0outside the uterus, most often in a fallopian tube.\u00a0Ectopic pregnancy can result as a complication of tubal damage.\u00a0Untreated\u00a0chlamydia\u00a0can increase the risk of\u00a0ectopic pregnancy\u00a0by damaging the reproductive tract<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31895782\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">7<\/a><\/sup>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pregnancy\u00a0and Neonatal\u00a0Complications:<\/strong>\u00a0Chlamydia\u00a0during pregnancy\u00a0may\u00a0increase\u00a0the\u00a0risk\u00a0of\u00a0delivery before time (preterm\u00a0delivery)<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK537286\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">8<\/a><\/sup>.\u00a0If chlamydia passes\u00a0to a baby during\u00a0childbirth, it can\u00a0cause\u00a0eye (conjunctivitis) and lung\u00a0infections\u00a0(pneumonia)\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0baby.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Infertility<\/strong>: In men, untreated chlamydia can\u00a0sometimes cause\u00a0pain and\u00a0swelling near\u00a0the\u00a0testicles,\u00a0which\u00a0may affect\u00a0fertility. In women,\u00a0infertility as a complication is usually\u00a0a\u00a0consequence of PID rather than\u00a0as a result of\u00a0direct chlamydia infection<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chp.gov.hk\/en\/static\/80030.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">9<\/a><\/sup>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reactive Arthritis:<\/strong>\u00a0This is joint inflammation that\u00a0can occur\u00a0after some infections, including chlamydia.\u00a0It may also\u00a0involve\u00a0eye\u00a0irritation and pain when passing urine<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chp.gov.hk\/en\/static\/80030.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">9<\/a><\/sup>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Higher Risk of\u00a0HIV\u00a0Infections:<\/strong>\u00a0Untreated chlamydia may increase the risk of\u00a0getting\u00a0or passing on\u00a0HIV<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/chlamydiainfections.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3<\/a><\/sup>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Diagnosis_of_Chlamydia\"><\/span><strong>Diagnosis of Chlamydia<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Chlamydia\u00a0is usually diagnosed\u00a0with a laboratory test on a urine sample or a swab from the area that may be infected,\u00a0such as the vagina, cervix, penis, rectum, or throat. The best test depends on your symptoms, sexual history, and the area that may have been exposed<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27681919\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">10<\/a><\/sup>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT):<\/strong>\u00a0NAAT is the preferred test for chlamydia because it is highly\u00a0accurate.
