This is most often due to a build-up of bilirubin, a yellow pigment produced when old red blood cells break down. Some people may notice a small yellow patch on the eye surface due to a usually harmless condition called a pinguecula (a small yellowish growth on the eye surface)2. In addition, long-term or severe eye allergies can also make the eyes look yellow or discoloured by causing changes on the eye’s surface.
