Babies and toddlers are more prone to catch these viruses since their immune system is still developing and learning to fight new infections<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC2722603\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2<\/a><\/sup>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Narrow nasal passages:<\/strong>\u00a0Newborns are obligatory nasal breathers, meaning they\u00a0mainly breathe\u00a0through their noses. It could be seasonal or year-round<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5038586\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">9<\/a><\/sup>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ear Infections:<\/strong>\u00a0Middle ear\u00a0infection is\u00a0common in toddlers,\u00a0frequently\u00a0associated with a cold. Fluid\u00a0builds\u00a0up behind the eardrum, which\u00a0can cause pain, headache, fever,\u00a0etc. Associated symptoms like runny nose or sore throat may also be seen<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/baby\/health\/colds-coughs-and-ear-infections-in-children\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">5<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthdirect.gov.au\/otitis-media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">10<\/a><\/sup>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Foreign object insertion:\u00a0<\/strong>Toddlers may accidentally insert small objects into their nostrils. This often causes a persistent runny nose from\u00a0typically only\u00a0one side (site of foreign body insertion), which may be foul-smelling or blood-stained. Such cases require prompt medical evaluation and should not be managed at home<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10782271\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">11<\/a><\/sup>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Runny Nose in Older Children<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Older children might have a runny nose because of any of the following:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Viral Infections:<\/strong>\u00a0Viral\u00a0infections\u00a0affecting the upper respiratory tract are common in children and\u00a0can cause runny noses<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC2722603\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2<\/a><\/sup>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sinus infections<\/strong>: Sinusitis is an infection that causes swelling of the sinuses. It can cause a\u00a0runny nose\u00a0and a blocked nose. A child may take\u00a010 days\u00a0to get better from acute sinusitis, while\u00a0chronic sinusitis can take 12 weeks or longer<a href=\"https:\/\/med.uth.edu\/orl\/2020\/01\/10\/pediatric-sinusitis-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Allergies:<\/strong>\u00a0Some allergies in children can occur when the body reacts to normally harmless substances like pollen, dust, certain foods, insect bites, or animals. Allergic rhinitis could also be triggered by\u00a0cold weather, chemicals, pollution,\u00a0dust,\u00a0or smoke. Symptoms may be mild or, in some cases, severe.<sup>\u00a0<\/sup>These can all lead to a congested and runny nose<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34438599\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">13<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kingstonandrichmond.nhs.uk\/patients-and-families\/patient-leaflets\/allergic-rhinitis-children\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">14<\/a><\/sup>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Nasal polyps or structural nasal problems:<\/strong>\u00a0These are soft growths inside the nose. Although harmless, they can block a child\u2019s nose\u00a0and also\u00a0lead to a runny nose<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/nasal-polyps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">15<\/a><\/sup>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Nasal Trauma:\u00a0<\/strong>Sometimes,\u00a0a clear\u00a0nasal discharge may occur after nasal\u00a0injury\u00a0such as\u00a0a\u00a0nasal fracture. This condition, known as\u00a0Cerebrospinal fluid\u00a0(CSF)\u00a0rhinorrhea,\u00a0is the\u00a0leakage of CSF from the child\u2019s nose\u00a0due to trauma or\u00a0defect. This\u00a0requires prompt evaluation by a pediatrician<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/chapter\/10.1007\/978-3-030-94781-1_31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">16<\/a><\/sup>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Symptoms_Associated_with_a_Runny_Nose\"><\/span><strong>Symptoms Associated with a Runny Nose<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Runny\u00a0nose\u00a0rarely occurs as a\u00a0stand-alone\u00a0symptom.\u00a0Usually, when it is associated with infections or\u00a0allergy, some other\u00a0common\u00a0symptoms\u00a0may also occur along.
