People with darker skin tones\u00a0will have higher amounts\u00a0of eumelanin<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10304091\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1<\/a><\/sup>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pheomelanin:<\/strong>\u00a0This is a type of melanin which produces red or yellow pigments<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10304091\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK459156\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2<\/a><\/sup>.\u00a0Unlike eumelanin, it does not\u00a0effectively\u00a0absorb UV rays, but it can keep the body cool and regulate\u00a0temperature\u00a0by\u00a0reflecting away the heat from the body, especially during the sunny days. It is seen in higher amount in people with lighter skin tone<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10304091\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1<\/a><\/sup>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Melanin is produced by melanocytes, which are the specialised pigment-producing cells found in the epidermis (outermost layer of the skin)<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10304091\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK459156\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2<\/a><\/sup>.\u00a0Melanocytes\u00a0produce\u00a0melanin\u00a0from an amino acid called tyrosine, through\u00a0a multi-step process, by using a key enzyme called tyrosinase. This\u00a0melanin\u00a0which\u00a0is\u00a0produced is then enclosed in\u00a0a membrane bound organelle called\u00a0melanosome.\u00a0These melanosomes are then actively moved to nearby keratinocytes, which are the main cells of the epidermis<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK459156\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As mentioned earlier,\u00a0melanin normally increases once your body\u00a0comes in contact with\u00a0the\u00a0UV rays. These hormones\u00a0may\u00a0cause variations in the level of melanin, inducing hyperpigmentation such as melasma<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK459271\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3<\/a><\/sup>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Certain Medications:<\/strong>\u00a0Certain medications such as antibiotics, birth control pills,\u00a0etc., can stimulate the production of melanin.
