However, smog itself is not a single pollutant. It is a combination of substances like ozone, fine particles, and nitrogen gases. And because of these different substances, it affects different groups of people differently<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8583367\/\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As urbanisation, traffic emissions, and industrial activities continue to rise, smog has become an increasingly common (and dangerous) part of the air we inhale every day<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0147651324006080\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a><sup>,<\/sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/clean-air-act-overview\/air-pollution-current-and-future-challenges\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a>. It is a public health concern that not only causes discomfort like coughing or eye irritation but also worsens existing heart and lung conditions and increases long-term health risks<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8583367\/\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As smog episodes become more frequent and intense, understanding their causes, effects, and the ways we can protect ourselves is essential for safeguarding our health and well-being.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Is_Smog_and_How_Is_Smog_Formed\"><\/span><strong>What Is Smog and How Is Smog Formed?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The word smog is a combination of two other words<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9332540\/\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a>:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Smoke (fine particles and gases released from burning materials such as coal, wood, fuel, and various industrial sources)\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fog (a low-lying cloud formed from tiny water droplets or ice crystals)\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Under certain environmental conditions (such as sunlight), these two components (smoke and fog) interact and result in a thick and hazy layer suspended close to the ground. This is how smog is formed<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8583367\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><sup>,<\/sup><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9332540\/\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fact: The term smog was first introduced by H. A. Des Voeux in 1905 to describe the polluted atmospheric conditions in several British towns. It gained widespread public attention in 1911, when Des Voeux reported over 1,000 deaths in Edinburgh and Glasgow caused by this dense and dangerous \u201csmoke-fog\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8583367\/\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Causes_of_Smog\"><\/span><strong>Causes of Smog<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Smog develops when various air pollutants are released into the atmosphere from natural and human activities.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Smog is caused due to<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8583367\/\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a>:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Industries and power plants:<\/strong> These emit large amounts of sulphur gases, nitrogen gases, and particulate matter (PM) through the burning of fossil fuels that eventually lead to smog.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vehicle emissions: <\/strong>Cars and trucks release large amounts of nitrogen oxides (NO<sub>x<\/sub>), PM, and hydrocarbons, all of which drive smog formation.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Combustion of fossil fuels:<\/strong> Coal, diesel, and other fuels used in households, industries, and electricity generation release sulphur gases, nitrogen gases, and PM, all of which can contribute to smog formation.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sunlight driven chemical reactions:<\/strong> Pollutants in the air (such as hydrocarbons and NO<sub>x<\/sub>) react in sunlight to form photochemical smog components like peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) and tropospheric ozone.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Natural sources:<\/strong> Volcanic eruptions, lightning, and forest fires can release NO<sub>x<\/sub> and sulphur gases that add to the overall pollution load.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Industrial solvents and chemical processes:<\/strong> They release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that react in sunlight and aggravate smog formation.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Types_of_Smog\"><\/span><strong>Types of Smog<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Broadly, there are two types of smog:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. And when this ozone mixes with fine particulate matter (such as PM<sub>2.5<\/sub>), it creates the thick, harmful smog we commonly see today<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6834528\/\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Adverse_Smog_Effects_on_Health\"><\/span><strong>Adverse Smog Effects on Health<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Smog is particularly alarming because of its adverse impact on health.
