Although common in children, with improved sanitation conditions in some parts of India, fewer kids are now getting exposed to hepatitis A at an early stage, making teens and adults more vulnerable to this infection<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/24044039_Epidemiological_transition_of_Hepatitis_A_in_India_Issues_for_vaccination_in_developing_countries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3<\/a><\/sup>.<sup> <\/sup>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hepatitis A disease can range from a mild illness with few or no symptoms to severe cases in some. It is a small, spherical, non-enveloped virus which is roughly 27 to 32 nanometres in diameter. It contains single-stranded RNA as its genetic material, along with specialised structures that enable it to infect liver cells and replicate within them<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK459290\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">4<\/a><\/sup>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How Hepatitis A Spreads<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Wondering how is hepatitis A spread? Laboratory testing methods (mentioned below) are essential for accurate hepatitis A diagnosis:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Anti-HAV IgM Test:<\/strong> This is the main test used to detect acute infection. IgM antibodies appear just before the start of symptoms (about 5 to 10 days before) and remain high for about a month. They typically disappear within six months. However, false positives can occur (especially after recent vaccination), so the test should be used only when there is a strong clinical suspicion<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8540458\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">6<\/a><\/sup>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pharmeasy.in\/diagnostics\/tests\/hav-igg-83\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Anti-HAV IgG Test<\/a>:<\/strong> These antibodies appear shortly after IgM and stay in the body for life. Their presence means the person has had a past infection or has been vaccinated<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8540458\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">6<\/a><\/sup>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>HAV RNA Tests (Nucleic Acid Amplification Tests): <\/strong>These are not commonly used but can detect the virus\u2019s genetic material in blood or stool. Elevated levels of alanine transaminase (ALT) and bilirubin, in particular, support the diagnosis and help assess the severity of infection<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK482489\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">8<\/a><\/sup>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote doc-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Lately, I\u2019ve been seeing in my clinical practice there\u2019s a clear shift in case demographics, and I\u2019ve had to consciously start keeping HAV in the differential when adults come in with hepatitis-like presentations. The clinical patterns are definitely changing, and my own diagnostic approach has had to evolve along with them.
