Punarnava derives its name from its nature of growth and proliferation. The aerial part of the plant dries up in the summer and regenerate in the rainy season; Its name, <em>Punarnava<\/em>, comes from the Sanskrit words <em>\u2018Punar\u2019<\/em> meaning \u201cagain\u201d and <em>\u2018Nava\u2019<\/em> meaning \u201cnew,\u201d symbolising the plant\u2019s ability to renew and restore itself<a href=\"https:\/\/sciencejournals.stmjournals.in\/index.php\/RRJoHS\/article\/view\/715%22%20\/hHYPERLINK%20%22https:\/\/sciencejournals.stmjournals.in\/index.php\/RRJoHS\/article\/view\/715\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Other_Names_of_Punarnava\"><\/span><strong>Other Names of Punarnava<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Punarnava is called Hogweed in English, and the botanical name of the plant is <em>Boerhavia diffusa<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/269846433_PUNARNAVA_BOERHAVIA_DIFFUSA_A_PROMISING_INDIGENOUS_HERBAL_DRUG\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This plant has many different names in India, such as:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Punarnava in Sanskrit\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gadapurna or Biskafra in Hindi\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Thazhuthama in Malayalam\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ghetuli in Marathi\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Kommeberu in Kannada\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Satodi in Gujarati\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Atikamamidi \/ Erra galijeru in Telugu\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mukurattai in Tamil.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote doc-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Based on my experience, I have observed that the ethyl acetate extract from the roots of punarnava may have strong antifungal properties. It has shown the ability to inhibit the growth of fungal species such as <em>Microsporum gypseum, M. fulvum, and M. canis<\/em>.
