Yoga, a 3000-year-old ancient practice, uses components like asanas and pranayamas to improve physical and mental health. This post will highlight the steps, benefits, and much more of a popular asana called markatasana<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22022122\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1<\/a><\/sup>. Let us discuss more the Markatasana and its health benefits.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group fact-box\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p>Did you know?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>In Indian mythology, many asanas are named after the vanara of the ancient scripture Ramayana. One such asana is markatasana or the monkey pose.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This asana was described for the first time as hatha yoga practice in the 17<sup>th<\/sup> century.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This asana signifies a monkey posture, and it is believed that monkeys are easily distracted; there are even terms like \u201cmonkey-mind\u201d describing a tendency of the human mind to leap from one object to the other. On the contrary, markatasana is a reclining posture focused on meditative practice.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mahipal at Ayodhya, India was the one to achieve a world record for the \u201clongest performance of markatasana,\u201d he performed markatasana for one hour and eleven minutes on Jun 21, 2020.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_Markatasana\"><\/span><strong>What is Markatasana?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Markatasana is also called the spinal twist pose, monkey pose, or markat asana. Markatasana is derived from Sanskrit words, \u201cMarkat\u201d, meaning monkey, and \u201casana,\u201d meaning yoga or posture. So, therefore it is also called the monkey pose<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/isbn_9781483464763\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4051462\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote doc-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>In my opinion, Markatasana may provide the added benefit of stimulating the spinal cord in the cervical area.
