It might be a possibility that they had pale\/yellow eyes or nails. The most probable reason for this may be jaundice.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jaundice is one of the most common liver disorders. It involves excess bilirubin circulating in the body. Bilirubin is a yellow-orange coloured bile pigment produced when the haemoglobin breaks down from the red blood cells. Jaundice is associated with yellow discolouration of the mucous membrane, skin, nail beds and the whites of the eyes<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK544252\/#:~:text=Jaundice%2C%20also%20known%20as%20hyperbilirubinemia,increased%20production%20or%20impaired%20excretion.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1<\/a><\/sup>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jaundice is quite common in newborns since their liver is not completely developed to eliminate the accumulated bilirubin. It usually goes away with time<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK532930\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We will discuss more about the symptoms and causes of jaundice, and also share some preventive measures that may be helpful, but it is recommended to consult a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Causes_the_Jaundice\"><\/span><strong>What Causes the Jaundice<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Jaundice can be caused at three stages.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are: before, during and after the production of bilirubin. Problems associated with any of the three phases may cause jaundice.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0The three stages where jaundice can occur along with their causes are:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Before the production of bilirubin (unconjugated jaundice):<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Reabsorption of a large hematoma or haemolytic anaemia may cause jaundice.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>During the production of bilirubin:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Infections due to viruses like Epstein-Barr virus, hepatitis A, chronic hepatitis B and C\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rare genetic metabolic defects\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Autoimmune diseases\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Alcohol\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Medicines like acetaminophen, oral contraceptives, penicillin, chlorpromazine, estrogenic or anabolic steroids.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>After production of bilirubin:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Gallbladder cancer\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pancreatic tumour\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gallstones\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inflammation of the gall bladder\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Symptoms_of_Jaundice\"><\/span><strong>Symptoms of Jaundice<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At times when jaundice is present, but without any visible symptoms, severity is predicted by finding the underlying cause of jaundice.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Various causes of jaundice may have a particular set of symptoms as given below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jaundice caused by infections may be accompanied by the following symptoms<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Flu-like symptoms include fever and chills\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Abdominal pain\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Yellowish skin<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nidirect.gov.uk\/conditions\/jaundice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">9<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dark-colored urine and\/or clay-colored stools<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nidirect.gov.uk\/conditions\/jaundice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">9<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If infections do not cause jaundice, you may have symptoms like:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Weight loss\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Itchy skin\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jaundice due to liver disease may be accompanied by the following symptoms:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Inflammation of joints\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Liver inflammation\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An early stage of hepatitis A, B and C\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Certain skin diseases<sup>\u00a0<\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> Jaundice is not a disease on its own but a clinical sign of an underlying condition affecting the liver, blood, or bile ducts. Oil, ghee and spices shall be avoided in jaundice. Non- vegetarian food should also be avoided. Meals may include vegetables without seasoning or tempering.\u00a0Though there is limited evidence that restrictive diets cure jaundice. A light, easily digestible diet may support liver function during illness, but dietary changes alone do not treat the underlying cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. However, there is insufficient scientific evidence to confirm that sugarcane juice keeps bilirubin levels under control and may help in jaundice<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4441162\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">4<\/a><\/sup>. Sugarcane juice is good for liver diseases. Sugarcane contains antioxidants and bioactive compounds, but its role in the management of jaundice has not been established<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4441162\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">4<\/a><\/sup>. For making sugarcane juice, the sugarcane is washed well, and the outer layer is removed. It is then cut into pieces, and the sugarcane extract and the juice are taken out. Squeeze the extract to remove any remaining juice.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Papaya leaf extracts have been studied mainly for platelet-related and antioxidant properties. However, there is limited supporting evidence for their use in jaundice or liver disease treatment in humans<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0963996914004451\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">14<\/a><\/sup>.
