Oregano belongs to the Lamiaceae family (mint family), which includes over 200 genera. The plants of this family are mainly used for culinary, medicinal, ornamental and fragrance purposes. The oregano plant mainly grows in mountain regions with rocky, calcareous soil and is native to the Mediterranean and Eurasia. The plants grow only a few inches tall with tiny flowers which may be pink, purple, or white in colour.
