It is an erect, large herbaceous plant that resembles a tree but is not woody. The leaves are large, palm-shaped, with an average 50-70 cm diameter. Depending on the flower type, the shape of the fruit varies. The fruit is 5-30 cm long and yellowish-orange in colour. The pulp is sweet, and the fruit contains many black seeds1.

Papaya is easy to grow in any well-drained soil that is free of standing water, which can kill the plant within 24 hours. The tree and its fruit require minimal rainfall during summer and spring. Extreme cold or heat can be damaging. Papaya trees and their fruit thrive at temperatures between 21°C and 32°C. A dry atmosphere enhances the taste of the fruit during ripening, whereas temperatures below 10°C slow down the ripening process. Additionally, it may take 8 to 10 months for papaya seeds to bear fruit after planting. Depending on environmental conditions, a papaya tree can produce 30–150 fruits per year3.

Nutritional Value of Papaya

The nutritional content fount of papaya fruits and papaya seeds (mg/100 g) is:

Carbohydrates: 7.76–13.44

Proteins: 0.36–0.45

Lipids: 0.20–0.29

Dietary Fibre: 0.37–0.60

I-carotene (μg/g): 208.67–4534.26

Ascorbic acid (mg/g): 35.32–43.80

Sodium: 6.79–9.53

Potassium: 18.36–24.78

Iron: 0.61–0.85

Calcium: 27.88–32.48

Zinc (papaya seeds): 5.00–6.17

Phosphorus: 11.54–16.81

Copper (papaya seeds): 0.50–1.09

Manganese (papaya seeds): 2.50–3.10

Magnesium: 9.45–13.63

Carotenoids, papain and chymopapain are enzymes found in the unripe fruit.
