Its leaves are often used in religious rituals and offered in prayers. It is known by many regional names: Adhararutha in Sanskrit, Iyalbudi in Tamil, Sriphalamu in Telugu, Billi in Gujarati, Bengal quince or stone apple in English and Bel in Hindi and Bengali<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/292739276_A_review_on_Aegle_marmelos_a_potential_medicinal_tree\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1<\/a><\/sup>. Its scientific name is <em>Aegle marmelo<\/em>s, and is believed to be one of the most important medicinal plants in India, Ceylon, and Burma<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/academicjournals.org\/article\/article1380546385_Dhankhar%20et%20el.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dNo drug has been longer and better known nor more appreciated by the inhabitants of India than the Bael fruit,\u201d said Chopra in his book, Indigenous Drugs of India (1982). Bael has been used in Ayurveda as a part of various formulations since ancient times to help with boils, dysentery, earaches, discharge from ears and fever\/cold<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/academicjournals.org\/article\/article1380546385_Dhankhar%20et%20el.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Nutritional_Value_of_Bael\"><\/span><strong>Nutritional Value of Bael<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Bael fruit is a nutrient-rich food that provides a variety of essential vitamins and minerals. According to available data, its nutritional composition includes<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9504793\/#:~:text=Vitamin%20C%20levels%20in%20unripe,in%20bael%20fruit%20%5B29%5D.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3<\/a><\/sup>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Proteins:<\/strong> 1.8\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fats: <\/strong>0.3\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Minerals:<\/strong> 1.7<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fibre: <\/strong>2.9<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Carbohydrates:<\/strong> 31.8\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Calcium:<\/strong> 0.085\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Phosphorus: <\/strong>0.050<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Potassium:<\/strong> 0.60<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vitamin C:<\/strong> 0.008\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Other than these nutrients, it also contains various essential amino acids, vitamins B1 and B2, and phytochemicals.<sup> <\/sup>It is observed that Bael contains the highest amount of alkaloids, flavonoids, and tannins compared to other medicinal plants<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1155\/2014\/497606\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">4<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Properties_of_Bael\"><\/span><strong>Properties of Bael<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Bael has various properties, and it might play a role in helping with many diseases. It might possess the potential properties such as<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4027346\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">5<\/a><\/sup>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>It may act as an antidiarrhoeal agent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It may be an antimicrobial (effectively kills various microorganisms)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It may have radioprotective potential (protects the body from the harmful effects of radiation)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It might have anticancer potential<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It may act as an antipyretic (fever-reducing) agent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It may have anti-ulcer properties<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It may be an antigenotoxic (prevents damage to DNA)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It may be a diuretic (increases urine output)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It may act as an anti-inflammatory agent<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Potential_Uses_of_Bael\"><\/span><strong>Potential Uses of Bael<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Bael might have the following potential uses:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. For Diabetes<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>According to animal studies<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/6589752_Hypoglycemic_effect_of_water_extract_of_Aegle_marmelos_fruits_in_streptozotocin_diabetic_rats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">6<\/a><\/sup>, oral intake or injection of Bael fruit extract might help to lower blood glucose and haemoglobin-bound glucose levels. It might also help increase the level of <a href=\"https:\/\/pharmeasy.in\/molecules\/human-insulin-7867\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">insulin<\/a> in the blood and might help the conversion of glucose in the liver. Certain compounds (coumarins) present in the bael fruit extract might help in the secretion of insulin from the liver and thus might be helpful in lowering blood sugar levels.<\/p><div id=\"sfa_container_158721\" class=\"sfa_container\" style=\"display:none\"><div class=\"sfa_overlay\"><\/div><button id=\"sfa_btn_158721\" class=\"sfa_btn\">Show Full Article<\/button><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, as per a clinical trial<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/academicjournals.org\/article\/article1380546385_Dhankhar%20et%20el.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2<\/a><\/sup>, lowering of blood cholesterol and a slight lowering of blood glucose might be possible in some patients with diabetes to whom Bael leaf extract was administered. However, more research is required. Kindly <a href=\"https:\/\/pharmeasy.in\/online-doctor-consultation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">consult a doctor<\/a> for serious conditions such as diabetes, which must be diagnosed and treated by a doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. For Stomach Ulcers<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Bael might have stomach protective effects. Stomach ulcers are mainly formed due to the accumulation of free radicals in the stomach cells (oxidative stress). Bael might exhibit antiulcer properties through its potential antioxidant activity and might eliminate the oxidative stress in the stomach lining and ulcer formation<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4615325\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">7<\/a><\/sup>. Additionally, the unripe Bael fruit might help with the damage to the stomach lining induced by absolute ethanol (alcohol) in the stomach<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/academicjournals.org\/article\/article1380546385_Dhankhar%20et%20el.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2<\/a><\/sup>. However, more research is required. Kindly consult a doctor. Please do not self-medicate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote doc-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Based on my experience, I have seen positive effects of Bael fruit in the management of ulcer disease. For Cancer<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In one of the studies<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ijbcp.com\/index.php\/ijbcp\/article\/download\/5808\/3816\/25064#:~:text=Its%20anticancer%20potential%20has%20been,and%20colon%20cancer%20cell%20lines.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">8<\/a><\/sup>, the administration of Bael has shown the potential to interfere with the growth of a tumour. The exact mechanism has not yet been established, but the alcoholic extract of Bael might have the potential to help against the growth of cancer cells. A bioactive compound present in the leaf extract of Bael might show the potential to interfere with the growth of breast cancer cells<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ijbcp.com\/index.php\/ijbcp\/article\/download\/5808\/3816\/25064#:~:text=Its%20anticancer%20potential%20has%20been,and%20colon%20cancer%20cell%20lines.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">8<\/a><\/sup>. However, more research is required. Cancer is a serious condition and must be diagnosed and treated by a doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. For Infections<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Bael might be effective for various infections caused by bacteria, indicating that it might act as a \u00a0 potent antibacterial agent<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/academicjournals.org\/article\/article1380546385_Dhankhar%20et%20el.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Studies<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/ijcrt.org\/papers\/IJCRT2408253.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">9<\/a><\/sup> have shown that the 50% ethanolic extract of Bael might have an effect on the Ranikhet disease virus. It might also act on the early activities of the virus in the body and may stop it, which is in contrast to the activity of modern drugs being used to treat viral diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, Bael leaf oil may show a protective effect against fungal infections.This activity may be due to its interference with the mechanism that leads to the growth of fungus in the body. Various studies<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/ijcrt.org\/papers\/IJCRT2408253.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">9<\/a><\/sup> have shown that it might have effectiveness against common fungal infections. However, more research is required to ascertain such claims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>6. For Diarrhoea<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The root extract and the unripe fruit pulp of Bael might help with diarrhoea. This potential use has been mentioned even in ancient Indian texts. It may be due to its potential effect against various bacteria causing stomach infections<a href=\"https:\/\/ijcrt.org\/papers\/IJCRT2408253.pdf\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a>. However, more studies are required. Bael contains compounds that help in improving liver function and promoting the elimination of toxins from the body. Thus, it may act as a potent anti-malarial agent<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/academicjournals.org\/article\/article1380546385_Dhankhar%20et%20el.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2<\/a><\/sup>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It was seen that Bael might even reduce the thyroid hormone levels. Therefore, it may be helpful for conditions with elevated thyroid levels like hypothyroidism<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/academicjournals.org\/article\/article1380546385_Dhankhar%20et%20el.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2<\/a><\/sup>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bael, along with other herbal constituents, in a compound Ayurvedic preparation, might have the potential to help with stomach irritability in irritable bowel syndrome<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/academicjournals.org\/article\/article1380546385_Dhankhar%20et%20el.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2<\/a><\/sup>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It was found that the ethanolic extract might have the potential to increase the excretion of sodium and might have potential use as a diuretic at high doses to eliminate excess water and sodium from the body.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bael might have a positive effect on the body by virtue of its potential antioxidant properties. This property might be exhibited due to the presence of bioactive compounds like tannins, flavonoids, etc. They might neutralise free radicals present in the body and may help reduce oxidative stress, which is the main causative factor for many diseases<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/academicjournals.org\/article\/article1380546385_Dhankhar%20et%20el.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2<\/a><\/sup>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In addition to all its potential health uses, Bael might even be good for the environment as it is a member of the plant species group called \u2018climate purifiers\u2019. These plants emit more oxygen in the sunlight than other plants.<sup>2<\/sup> The Bael plant might also participate in the absorption and neutralisation of harmful poisonous gases from the atmosphere<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/academicjournals.org\/article\/article1380546385_Dhankhar%20et%20el.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2<\/a><\/sup>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bael might also possess potential radioprotective properties.
