Has Your Child Tested Positive For COVID? Here’s What To Do

The second wave of coronavirus in India is much stronger than the first one, leading to widespread concern. The extent of the spread of COVID is no longer limited to a certain age group, affecting children and adults alike. While there are cases throughout the country, cities such as Mumbai alone have seen a 65% increase in COVID-19 positive reports in paediatric cases since the beginning of March.

This may sound like an alarm bell, but as per the data and research, most cases with children are mild when compared to others. They generally have better prognosis, milder symptoms and are asymptomatic. The major COVID-19 symptoms seen in children are:

As a parent, it is natural to seek answers regarding the steps you need to take if your child has tested COVID positive. It is necessary to understand that the impact of the disease is low in most cases of COVID in children and it is crucial not to panic. While doing your best to stay calm, follow medical guidelines, safety protocols and your doctor’s advice for a smooth recovery.

if your child gets COVID-19 they should stay quarantined at home for 10 days after positive testing or onset of symptoms, and must demonstrate improving symptoms without fever for 24 hours.

Dr. M.G. Kartheeka, MBBS, MD

When Should You Take Your Child to the Doctor?

If your child needs to be tested, it is recommended that you observe and keep a close watch on the developing symptoms of COVID-19. The immediate step to be taken is to ensure safety protocols, such as wearing a mask, sanitising and physical distancing, are followed within the family. Consult your child’s doctor for further assistance.

Children with mild symptoms can stay at home throughout their recovery without the need for hospitalisation, if suggested by a pediatrician. However, if your child is experiencing serious symptoms that persist for more than 7 days, medical attention is necessary. The symptoms may include:

What If Your Child Tests Positive for COVID-19?

The spread of coronavirus is mainly from person to person. Parents need not fear, as based on current evidence, children do not appear to be at a higher risk.

Parents can help prevent the spread of germs and educate their children about how to stop the spread of COVID-19 infection. Besides encouraging your child to follow safety protocols and hygienic methods, do the following:

Make sure you consult your doctor in any type of medical emergency. It is advised not to self-medicate your child. A proper diagnosis of the symptoms by a paediatrician is required for any prescription or medication.

What is the COVID-19 Incubation Period for Children?

The incubation period is defined as a period between the contraction of the virus and the onset of symptoms. In the case of the coronavirus,

On average, symptoms showed around 5 days post-exposure to the virus. While caring for your children, keep in mind that the contagious stage is around 1-2 days before the symptoms occur. Hence, regardless of the stage, it is advised that you follow safety protocols strictly throughout the period of disease and recovery.

Will There be a COVID-19 Vaccine for Children?

Vaccines go under several clinical trials so that their safety and effectiveness is ensured; hence their availability depends on these trials. For now, the best way to protect and recover from COVID-19 is by following public safety and health guidelines.

Educate Your Kids Now, for a Safer Tomorrow

As a parent, explain the importance of hygienic practices and safety protocols and their role in disease prevention. It is natural to have queries, but the key is to refrain from panicking and educating your children instead. If a child tests positive for the virus, ensure that you put safety and hygiene, along with mental health.

The question of mental health arises as children can commonly have misconceptions or queries about the disease. As parents, do your best to have an age-appropriate conversation where you explain the situation in a manner that induces a sense of calm and answers their questions as well. Lead by example, tell them about safety and hygiene and teach them the appropriate measures to be taken during outbreaks and related health issues.

Do consult a paediatrician at the earliest even for the mild and asymptomatic cases. Monitor your child’s health and behaviour and watch out for signs and symptoms requiring medical attention.

To relieve stress, family time with safety protocols is recommended. Focus on the things to be grateful for while spending quality time. Along with these, ensure that your kids constantly wash their hands, sanitise, maintain respiratory hygiene, adhere to proper disposal of materials, etc.

A Real Story Of The First COVID Vaccine Experience

Since May 1st, 2021, the Government of India has opened up vaccines for those between the ages of 18 and 44. From that day onwards, anyone 18+ could get themselves registered on the CoWIN website to set up an appointment for getting vaccinated. However, due to shortages in the supply of vaccines, people often found that they weren’t able to get confirmed bookings for that elusive shot.

Many people have been confused and frustrated in the past few days over this issue. PharmEasy spoke to one person in this 18+ category who persevered and managed to get through these hurdles and successfully got vaccinated. Here is what he has to say about the whole experience –

Q 1- What was the procedure that you followed to register for the vaccine?

I went to the Cowin website and got registered, then it was a waiting game. I followed ”mybmc” (Bombay Municipal Corp) on Twitter constantly as they regularly post information on slots opening, centres, etc. So, I was up to date on the latest information. 10 mins before the website opened I was ready. Based on the information I gathered from following mybmc on Twitter, I was able to quickly select an appointment time and confirm. In that sense it was hassle-free.

Q 2- How did you get a slot for the vaccine?

I simply selected from the website for the available slot and confirmed it.

Q 3- Was there any queue at the vaccine centre/camp that you visited? –

I reached the vaccination centre half an hour later than my scheduled time. I had to carry a soft copy/hard copy of my Aadhaar card and show it upon arrival. Then one receives a pre-printed slip and proceeds forward. 2 nurses were there to guide me during the procedure. After getting the vaccine I was sent to the observation room and was there for 30 minutes.

If pregnant, getting a COVID-19 vaccine can protect from severe illness from COVID-19. The vaccines do not cause infection in pregnant people or babies, getting vaccinated doesn’t cause any harm and is found to be very safe.

Dr. Ashish Bajaj – M.B.B.S, M.D.

Q 4- How was the overall process for your vaccination?

Though I was late, the whole process went pretty smoothly.

Q 5- Can you share your post-vaccination experience?

I experienced some of the normal side effects and got a fever, and body ache, cold and cough that night. But by the next day, I was perfectly fine and got back to my normal routine.

Q 6- Did you experience any side effects? If yes, which?

Well about 10:30 pm – 11 pm I had a fever and body ache. The next morning I felt weak but my temperature was back to normal. I was given a strip of paracetamol to manage these symptoms. I advise all those reading this to please stay hydrated, have proper food and for at least 4 days after getting vaccinated, avoid drinking or smoking.

Q 7- What precautions did the technicians/doctors ask you to take between your first and second dose?

The normal Covid-19 protocols, staying home, keeping up a healthy diet, wearing a mask and maintaining social distance as per usual.

While there are bound to be technical issues with the website and getting a slot booked, don’t give up and try your best. Keep an eye out for local news from official sources regarding slots and timings, be patient and keep at it.

Everyone needs to get vaccinated as soon as possible, especially the older citizens as well as those who are at high risk. The sooner we get people vaccinated, the faster India will be able to fight and overcome COVID-19! Wear a mask, maintain social distance and keep following the normal COVID-19 guidelines to protect yourself and those around you.

How To Read Your Reports For COVID-Related Tests?

Given the current scenario where several kinds of diagnostic tests are being conducted to check the status of a COVID positive person, these tests are not to be done at all. Your doctor shall advise you only if he/she feels there’s a need to do them. These tests are best interpreted by a doctor. However, here are some insights that can help you gather a better understanding of the test report.

How to Interpret These Tests?

Doctors usually recommend a series of tests, to develop a complete picture of the level of infection and its spread throughout the body.

Conclusion

Prevention is better than cure and prevention, in this case, the prevention begins at home. If you are experiencing any mild symptoms related to COVID-19, it is best to consult a primary physician who will usually recommend the aforementioned tests. With timely identification and diagnosis, it is indeed possible to beat the second wave of COVID-19.

What Is The 6-Minute Walk Test For COVID-19?

By now, we all know that with coronavirus infection, it is crucial to monitor blood oxygen saturation levels. That is why doctors suggest that every household should keep an oximeter. Whether you have a case of confirmed COVID-19 or you think you have been exposed, it is vital to keep an eye on your blood oxygen level.

In this context, the 6-minute walk test or the 6MWT has gained popularity. What is this test and when do you need to take it? Let’s find out.

What is the 6MWT?

Simply put, this test is a measure of how healthy your lungs and heart are. It is usually advised to COVID patients who are being treated at home.

As far as I know, the six-minute walk test is a diagnostic tool employed to evaluate lung capacity. It involves assessing the level of breathlessness experienced by a patient after a six-minute walk and determining their oxygen needs during their hospital stay. This test is particularly used in the case of COVID-19 patients.

Dr. Rajeev Singh, BAMS

How to conduct the test

This is a simple test that you can perform at home and it doesn’t cost you any money. Simply measure your oxygen levels at rest. Then walk for 6 minutes in your room, with the oximeter attached to your finger. Note your oxygen levels during and after this 6 minute walk test. The 6 minutes may be cut short for 3 minutes in patients above 60 years of age.

The most important thing is to rest 10 minutes before starting the 6MWT.

Dr. M.G. Kartheeka, MBBS, MD

What does the test reveal

The 6-minute walk test, although it is helpful to estimate the functional capacity and fitness of an individual when done at home, may have its limitations as it may underestimate the exercise capacity in some lung conditions like Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease due to shorter track length available at home.

Dr. Ashish Bajaj, M.B.B.S., M.D.

How many times should you take the test and who should opt for it?

Doctors advise that this test should be taken at least twice a day by people who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 infection

Even if you don’t have COVID-19, you can still opt for the test twice a day because it helps you assess your lungs’ health. Besides, some people do not witness any symptoms of COVID and yet their blood oxygen saturation level drops. This is called ”happy hypoxia”, but it is equally dangerous and requires medical attention.

According to my knowledge, COVID-19 is known to make patients prone to lung infection that present as multiple respiratory problems. Studies have shown that the six-minute walk test is used as one of the important benchmarks to assess the aerobic capacity and endurance of individuals. The distance covered during this six-minute walk can serve as a valuable measure for comparing performance capacity and measure outcomes in COVID-19 patients.

Dr. Siddharth Gupta, MD

If you have contracted COVID-19, then please stay in home isolation. Keep a regular check  on your oxygen level and other symptoms and if necessary arrange for hospitalization. Everyone, whether a COVID survivor or someone who has not contacted the virus should get the COVID vaccine as soon as they can. Continue to take all the COVID-19 precautionary measures. That is the only way we can put the pandemic behind us.

COVID could be very exhausting. Therefore, a health checkup is crucial to know your level of wellbeing.

How Can We Survive The Second Wave Of COVID-19?

By now, we are all aware that the 2nd wave of COVID-19 has arrived. According to the latest coronavirus news, several states have imposed or renewed COVID restrictions. Vaccinations have been liberalized and accelerated so that more people can get the COVID vaccine as soon as possible.

The surge of COVID-19 cases in India has happened quite suddenly and has taken a lot of people by surprise.

It’s no wonder that people are asking what the second wave is, what triggered it and will the same COVID precautionary measures we adopted throughout last year suffice? Read on for all the answers.

What is the second wave and what caused it?

India recorded the first few cases of COVID-19 in March 2020 and then on until September of 2020, COVID cases continued increasing. After September, fewer cases began to be reported and the first wave of COVID officially began to decline. By the beginning of 2021, only a handful of cases were reported in PAN India and normalcy was almost restored.

However, from February onwards the cases began to rise exponentially and in 1 month (February to March) we recorded as many cases as in 6 months of 2020. This is the second wave because it is the second time that COVID cases are on the rise.

What exactly caused the second wave is unknown. However, this second wave could have been triggered by a few new strains of the coronavirus including the UK virus, South Africa virus and the double mutant. These mutants of coronavirus are very infectious and have a high R-value (the number of people who can be infected from one person).

2 other reasons why the second wave has spread like wildfire are:

  1. People’s apathy towards COVID-19 precautions like not wearing masks, not washing hands, not using sanitisers. (pandemic fatigue).
  2. Large-scale congregations especially during the election season and for certain ceremonies.

Why is the second wave so concerning?

The second coronavirus wave is of concern because this new mutant SARS-COV is very contagious and has learned to dodge our antibodies. Even the 18-45 age group, who supposedly has strong immunity, is susceptible. This group has been called the COVID-19 super-spreader. They are the ones who have to be out in public the most. And once they come home with the infection, they rapidly spread it to others in the house/apartment building/housing society. This new COVID-19 strain is also infecting children.

Are the symptoms of the second wave COVID infection the same?

Even though the new strains of COVID are accompanied by new symptoms which do not mean that the old symptoms are no longer seen. COVID positive people may still have a fever, body ache, loss of smell/ taste, soreness or dryness in the throat, runny nose and cough. However this time, solitary symptoms may confuse people. For example, someone with diarrhoea may attribute it to a stomach infection but it is also now a symptom of COVID. Some new COVID-19 symptoms have been noticed. Sometimes just one of these symptoms is exhibited –

Here’s What You Should Do If You Develop Symptoms Of COVID

How to keep ourselves safe from the new COVID-19 wave

The new double-mutated coronavirus too spreads through droplets from infected persons or through contact with contaminated surfaces. That is why the same precautions as before will help you now –

If you notice anyone in your family or yourself showing the symptoms of COVID-19, practise home isolation and book a COVID test right away. Contact your doctor even before the reports arrive. Follow the COVID-19 protocol at all times.

All you need is to book a test to check your health.

What Should You Do If You Develop COVID-19 Symptoms?

Just when we thought the worst part of the pandemic was over, the second coronavirus wave hit us. Every day lakhs of COVID cases in India are being reported. The new COVID-19 strains that have triggered the second wave are very infectious and one infected person can spread the disease to many other individuals.

So, what should be your course of action if you think you are displaying signs of COVID?

Recognise the symptoms of COVID

The usual symptoms of coronavirus include fever and sore throat, cough, weakness, loss of smell, taste. You may be surprised to know that the new COVID-19 strain triggers certain new symptoms in addition to the usual ones. Be mindful regarding-

What’s next?

Sometimes these symptoms may not show up all together and you may experience just one of these symptoms. If so, immediately isolate yourself in a separate well-ventilated room. Contact your doctor immediately. Book an RT-PCR test. The RT-PCR test is recommended for anyone who thinks he/she may have contracted COVID-19. This is a swab test and mucous is collected from your nasal passage or your throat with a cotton bud. The results are usually available between 48-72 hours. If you are unable to book the RT-PCR test, you can opt for the Rapid Antigen test. If your Rapid antigen test is positive, then no need to do the RT-PCR as it implies the presence of COVID.

What if you get a positive result?

If you witness any of the symptoms of COVID, don’t self-diagnose. Since the new strains of COVID are accompanied by new symptoms, it is very difficult to zero in on the real cause of the symptoms. Without any delay have a word with your doctor who may recommend an RT-PCR test.

If you are unable to book a slot for the RT-PCR, you may opt for the rapid antigen test. Irrespective of whether the report is positive or negative, inform your doctor who will then suggest the next course of action.

A positive RT-PCR result means you have COVID-19. There’s no need to be anxious. There are ways to deal with a COVID infection. The majority of COVID cases are mild and are treated at home.

First things first, you need to visit or contact your doctor. Ensure you are wearing a mask. Your doctor will analyse your condition based on your age, fitness level, comorbidities, other diagnosed illnesses, oxygen saturation level or whether you are pregnant or are breastfeeding. Young people with no comorbidities, no breathing issues and normal blood oxygen saturation levels shall be advised of treatment at home. Here’s what you need to do –

Do’s and don’ts of self-isolation-

Caregivers must-

What to do if the test comes back negative?

If you got tested because you showed COVID-19 symptoms and the test was negative, speak with your doctor. You might need to undergo another test. Improper administration of the test can produce a false-negative result

Another reason why you might have to get tested again is that sometimes if you opt for the test very soon after exposure, the result can be negative. The symptoms and the virus become detectable 6-14 days after exposure.

However, your doctor might say that your symptoms are triggered by a common cold or the flu, in which case, you needn’t undergo the COVID-19 test again.

Is HRCT necessary for all COVID patients?

No, only COVID-19 patients with moderate or severe infection require High-Resolution Computed Tomography of the chest. This detects if the person’s infection has progressed to pneumonia.

Health checkup is a very crucial part of our life. So, don’t miss out on it.

Fight Against COVID: Helpline & Guide For Mumbai District

With the current death toll in Maharashtra having crossed 61,000 and the existing cases of COVID-19 in the state being more than 40 lakhs, the entire state has declared a ‘Break-the-chain’ initiative. Let’s take a look at some of the key points of contact for the people of Mumbai during these dire times.

Hospitals

The state of Maharashtra has designated several hospitals and treatment facilities to help patients affected with COVID-19 in Mumbai and most of these have a decent rate of bed availability as well. Here’s a list of all such hospitals in Mumbai:

Vaccination Centres

The Government of Maharashtra has assigned several public hospitals as designated COVID-19 vaccination centres. A list of some of the government, as well as private vaccination centres with the best medical facilities in Mumbai, are given below:

Plasma Donors

Some of the key organisations that are currently providing donors for plasma therapy and facilitating direct contact of the families of patients with donors, are Team SOS, Dhoondh, PlasmaDonor.in, PINT, PlasmaLine.in, GiveRed.in, SimplyBlood.com, CityDonors.com and NDTV Plasma Drive.

Remdesivir Availability

The availability of this crucial medicine that is being used in the treatment of patients suffering from COVID-19 has been tough, to say the least. Due to the massive surge in COVID-19 cases in the state, there are only a few medicine distributors who have the availability of Remdesivir in their stock. Some of these distributors can be contacted by phone:

Lab Testing By Pincodes

Travel Information

Due to the rising COVID-19 cases, the use of public transportation will be limited to medical staff and government employees only, while people visiting other districts and cities are being marked and compelled to undergo a 14 day home quarantine.

The Latest COVID-19 News That You Must Know!

The steadily rising numbers of COVID-19 cases throughout the country has become a cause of concern for the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Although this rise in daily cases has not been consistent throughout the country, certain states like Maharashtra, Punjab, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala and Karnataka have experienced a massive spike in numbers.

This has forced these state governments to resume strict COVID-19 protocols and preventive measures. Along with placing increased restrictions on gatherings in public places like shopping malls and parks, these states have also enforced the Test-Track-Treat Protocol to help flatten the curve once again.

The Test-Track-Treat Protocol

The renewed surge in COVID-19 cases in several Indian states has resulted in the reinforcement of the Test-Track-Treat Protocol that can help curb the rapid spread of the virus. The need for the Test-Track-Treat Protocol has become even more significant and observing strategies for demarcating containment zones has also become necessary at the micro-level.

Along with the Test-Track-Treat Protocol, state governments have also marked public places as the main cause of the rapid spread of the virus.

Public Places – the Super Spreader Zones

The Delhi government has reported a total of 6,49,973 active cases of COVID-19 as of 24th March 2021. This resulted in the Delhi government placing malls, cinema halls, indoor auditoriums and metro stations under the tags of ‘Super Spreader Zones’. The government of Delhi also declared that massive randomized testing for the virus is to be conducted in these zones to identify active cases and quarantine them for treatment. Law enforcement authorities in Delhi have also been instructed to prevent public gatherings during the upcoming festivals of Holi, Shab-e-Baraat and Navratri.

Holi Banned in 5 Indian States

Since the beginning of 2021, the country has not recorded such a rise in the number of cases as has been recorded in the last few days, indicating an unprecedented spike in the spread of the virus. As a result, these 5 states have placed a ban on public gatherings during festivals like Holi:

No Need for Comorbidity Certificate

In the wake of such an alarming rate of increase in infected cases, amping up the vaccination drive has become one of many solutions. Union Minister Prakash Javadekar has urged all Indians above the age of 45 years to get vaccinated with the COVID-19 vaccine regardless of comorbidities since it is an effective preventive measure.

Towards a Safer Future

With the multi-pronged approach of the Indian Government with regards to increasing the intensity of the ongoing vaccination drives and placing strict restrictions in containment zones, there is hope for the country to return to normal. Placing bans on public gatherings may seem extreme even in 2021 but measures like these are a necessary evil needed to fight for the greater good.
