6 Ways The World Will Change Post COVID-19!

The COVID-19 pandemic has turned our lives upside down in so many ways. From lockdowns, social distancing to working from home, our daily routines have been completely overhauled.

Now people are beginning to ask an important question – are these changes temporary? Or will they be a permanent part of our lives from now onwards?

Why Our Lives May Not Be The Same Again

We have read news reports of healthcare workers working 24*7 to battle COVID-19 at great risk to their lives. Some of them are staying in temporary hostels, away from their families, and doing their job.

But can they continue to work in a state of high alert forever? That too, while putting themselves in danger. The stress due to COVID-19 on our healthcare system needs to come down.

Moreover, consider the present situation in the world, the summer Olympics, IPL, major trade conventions to India’s economy – everything has come to a halt due to COVID-19. While no one can say for certain when things will go back to normal or if they even will, one thing is certain.

Our lives after the lockdown will no longer be the same. There will be radical changes in how we work, commute, socialize and communicate.

This is a must to ensure COVID-19 is contained for our good.

Life After Lockdown

1. Embrace contactless greetings

Planning to shake hands? Think again. Immediately after COVID-19 struck, there were visuals of world leaders ditching the handshake and using the ‘Namaste’ greeting. The Namaste is a form of greeting used in India that does not involve contact with the other person, unlike a handshake.

With social distancing being encouraged, we will see more and more people ditching the handshake because of the risk a handshake carries in a post-COVID-19 world.

2. Changing the way we learn

With schools and colleges being shut, there is a lot of interest in online classes. Teachers across the world are using the power of the internet to deliver educational content to a student’s house.

Real-time online classes are being held on apps like Zoom that have ensured that the absence of a physical classroom does not stop the learning of students. This could signal a change in the way students learn in a school after the pandemic ends.

3. Frequent washing of hands

Are you washing your hands frequently? One thing the COVID-19 pandemic has taught us is to maintain very high standards of personal hygiene. People are now understanding how simple acts like washing hands with soap and water may save their lives.

Before the pandemic started, many of us treated hand washing very casually, but that has changed completely in the past few months and this change is something that is going to stay for a long time to come.

4. No more public spitting

In India, it is common to see spit stains on government buildings, railway stations and roads. While the government tried to spread awareness by putting up posters and even imposing fines, no one cared.

But now that everyone has to wear masks in public places and maintain personal hygiene, spitting could be a thing of the past.

5. Better air quality

Three to four weeks into the lockdown, environmentalists across the world noticed something strange – the ozone layer was healing itself. Not just that, air quality in cities like Delhi and Mumbai has improved drastically during the lockdown.

What this tells us is that nature can heal quickly if we give it a little space and time. This will put into perspective how we have taken nature for a ride all these years and encourage people to do more for the environment and enjoy the advantages of a greener earth.

6. Be more grateful

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought us closer than ever before. Everyone is united in efforts to contain the virus. We have realized that if we don’t prepare ourselves well, then we can lose what we have now.

This thought that we may lose it if we are not careful has made us more appreciative of the present and thankful for what we have.

Conclusion

While we may be in lockdown at present, we should prepare ourselves mentally for the changes going to take place post-COVID-19. This will help us adapt and emerge as stronger individuals.

COVID-19 – Things-To-Do To Reduce Risk Of Infection!

Despite massive efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19, it has spread to almost every country in the world. So, now the question on everyone’s mind is ”What can I do to protect myself from this coronavirus?”The best way to prevent catching the infection is to avoid being exposed to this virus.

Here are some things you can do to reduce your exposure to COVID-19.

Keep at least 6-feet distance between yourself and other people. Stay away from crowded places and avoid mass gatherings. Small liquid droplets which may contain the virus are expelled from the nose or mouth during coughing or sneezing. If you are too close, you might inhale these droplets, including the coronavirus if the person coughing has the disease. Regularly and thoroughly, wash your hands with soap and water or alcohol-based hand rub/sanitizer for at least 20 seconds which kills the viruses that may be on your hands. You can get COVID-19 by touching a surface that has the virus on it. By touching such surfaces, hands can easily pick up viruses which can eventually transfer to your eyes, nose or mouth.   When you cough or sneeze, ensure that you cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your bent elbow. The used tissue should be disposed off immediately. Use face masks or homemade protective covers for your face and mouth in case you step out of your house to buy groceries or for emergency cases.In-Blog Get medical attention immediately if you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing. Follow the directions of your local health authority.   Stay informed about the latest developments regarding COVID-19. Follow your healthcare provider’s advice, as well as your national and local public health authority on how to protect yourself and others from COVID-19.

If you are in or have recently visited (past 2 weeks) COVID-19 affected areas

Have a plan for if you get sick

What to do if you have symptoms?

COVID-19 – How Can Flattening The Curve Help Us?

So far the lockdown has been extended till 3rd May from 14th April when it was initially going to end. While it will continue to cause inconvenience to countless people, lockdown is for the greater good. It is one of the most effective ways to slow down the spread of coronavirus which can save thousands of lives. In this context, virologists are talking about the need for ”flattening the curve”. We have all come across this expression in the news. But what does it signify? How is lockdown helping us in flattening the curve? Read on to understand.

What is meant by ‘flattening the curve’?

A curve is a line that is plotted on a graph. It can help manage, control or monitor a situation. It could be used to understand anything- for example, the increase of population density, the rise of unemployment, the increase of global temperature, etc.Similarly, the curve can also be used to track the speed at which a virus spreads. That is why experts are using it to gauge the threat level of COVID-19.A curve is upward moving or northward when many people become infected all at once in a very short period. In this context, how many people are infected is not important, rather the time it takes for those people to be infected holds great significance.Flattening the curve means prolonging the time it takes for the virus to spread. Maybe the same number of people would be infected but more gradually. Instead of thousands being infected in a month, flattening the curve would ensure those same thousands may be infected in maybe 12 months.

Why is flattening the curve so important?

Every country has limited medical resources. No matter how advanced the healthcare system, there is a finite number of- If the curve is northward, a huge segment of the population will be infected by COVID-19 simultaneously. They will all need to be hospitalized simultaneously.sub-1But since we do not have an endless supply of medical essentials, there will be no way to ensure that each sick person gets the treatment he/she needs. The healthcare system will collapse under the burden of the sick. This is the worst-case scenario and unless the curve is flattened, we are headed towards a healthcare crisis from which we may never recover. The death toll too will spike in such a scenario.

How will flattening the curve help?

By flattening the curve, the spread of COVID-19 will be slowed and the healthcare infrastructure will have time to cope. This will also buy us time to formulate necessary drugs and manufacture or import protective gear and ventilators. So, even if thousands continue to fall sick, tackling the challenge will be less difficult.

How to flatten the curve?

Flattening the curve becomes easy with cooperation among individuals as well as by following the instructions of the government. The measures that we have adopted to prevent the spread of coronavirus also serve as ways to flatten the curve. WHO has urged every individual to follow these instructions to ensure that as few people contract COVID-19 as possible- sub

Sweeping measures introduced by governments to slow down transmission

Testing people who are likely to have contracted the disease and isolating them is a way to flatten the curve by not allowing them to infect others. But we have limited test kits and this measure is not viable for the long term.Similarly, aggressive contact tracing is urgent, but if the number of the infected keeps swelling, it would be impossible to find and quarantine all the people who had come in contact with the infected. This is where the need for lockdown comes in. Lockdown and its strict enforcement will ensure that people stay in their homes and are not exposed to the virus. It may seem hard to be confined in our homes, but this could save the lives of millions by effectively and quickly flattening the curve. If we obey the lockdown, together we will be able to flatten the curve. The world is at war with coronavirus and we are all brave soldiers who must follow these instructions so that COVID-19 can be beaten completely and victory shall be ours!  Disclaimer: The information provided here is for educational/awareness purposes only and is not intended to be a substitute for medical treatment by a healthcare professional and should not be relied upon to diagnose or treat any medical condition. COVID-19 – How Can Social Distancing Help?

3 months ago, we were not even familiar with the expression ‘social distancing’. But then the coronavirus pandemic began to spread across the world infecting hundreds of thousands of people. With the rising cases in India, we too have been urged to stay home and practice social distancing.

So, what is social distancing and how does it work? Read on to find out.

What Is Social Distancing?

Social distancing means keeping a minimum distance of 5-6 feet between you and other people outside your home. This means no group gatherings and staying away from crowded places. It limits your exposure to the virus and keeps your family safe.

Remember to step out alone to buy groceries and other essentials. Avoid taking other family members or anyone else with you. The government has instructed shop owners to ensure that social distancing is followed by all shoppers.

So, let us understand why coronavirus is so dangerous and why we need social distancing.

The Dangers Of Coronavirus

Coronavirus is deadly, we already know that from the staggering death toll from across the globe. But, what is even more alarming is the speed at which it spreads.

According to the observations of WHO that tracked the pattern of the transmission across the world, the first 1 Lakh people were infected in 67 days. The next 1 Lakh were infected in 12 days. The virus took only 4 days to infect another 1 Lakh people and finally in just 2 days 1 Lakh new people contracted the virus.

This is called an exponential rise. Like wildfire, it has consumed Europe and the USA and these countries seem to be at a loss about how to prevent the spread of the virus even further.

And the same pattern is beginning to emerge in India. By March 30th, the number of infected patients escalated by 10 times in just 15 days.

To prepare for future pandemics caused by various pathogens, it is necessary to evaluate the impact of national social distancing not only on the spread of COVID-19, but also on the transmission of various infectious diseases like influenza, and infections by adenovirus and rhinovirus.

Dr. Ashish Bajaj , M.B.B.S., M.D. in Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology

India Takes Up The Fight Against Coronavirus

Medical experts in India knew that unless the exponential spread of the disease is stopped, healthcare services in India would be overwhelmed. In a country with a huge population, the situation can become graver than in Europe.

So, what could India do to stop transmission?

While testing and contact tracing are the domains of experts, all the public needs to do is practice social distancing.

The Importance Of Social Distancing To Slow Down The Spread Of COVID-19

From midnight of March 24th, a complete lockdown for 21 days was imposed on India to make social distancing more effective. On 14th April, the prime minister further extended the lockdown till 3rd May. Both the Central government and state governments have requested the people of the country to minimize person-to-person contact or contact with the outside world.

Apart from social distancing, vaccination against COVID-19 is very important as getting vaccinated could save your life. COVID-19 vaccines have saved millions of lives since their introduction and provide strong protection against serious illness, hospitalization and death.

Dr. Ashish Bajaj , M.B.B.S., M.D. in Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology

The Research Behind The Efficacy Of Social Distancing

This move can be backed by research conducted in Australia that found that social distancing should be applied as early as possible before the virus starts spreading fast. The longer the country takes to declare social distancing, the more time the virus has to transmit itself aggressively.

This is where Europe went wrong. They acted when it was too late and that is why today they are unable to contain the spread of COVID-19.

Furthermore, research by the Indian Council of Medical Research has found that social distancing can reduce the spread of coronavirus by as much as 62%!

Another study by COVID-19 concluded that without social distancing, the number of infected people could reach 13 Lakh by the middle of May.

Covid 19 mainly spreads airborne by droplets. The droplets from coughing or sneezing can travel upto 3 feet when protective masks are worn and without them they can travel 22 ft in a closed environment. Hence social distancing along with masking is necessary to prevent the spread of covid 19.

Dr. M.G. Kartheeka,MBBS, MD(Pediatrics)

Reasons For Implementing Social Distancing

Social distancing is an absolute necessity at this hour.

Blog-Sub

Why Is It So Important? Let Us Explain

The ICMR found that temperature checks that were imposed at airports before the blanket ban on travel might not have been sufficient. Many people who came in from abroad had the virus in their bodies but they had not experienced fever yet. The virus could have been in the incubation phase in these people. Nearly 46% of infected people might have been missed due to this.

The ICMR also said it might take the next few months for the COVID-19 to truly manifest itself. We will not know the full extent of the spread of this infection until then. These months are crucial and without preventive measures, we too could end up like Europe and the USA.

India ranks 57th in a list of 195 countries in terms of how prepared a country is for a pandemic. So, we are not very well equipped to handle a health crisis of this proportion. Social distancing will ensure that we don’t get to the serious stages of this COVID-19.

Conclusion

Now you know why social distancing is so vital in the fight against coronavirus and we all have to do our part to win this battle. Stay home, and resist the temptation of going out. Use social media and your smartphone to stay in touch with friends and family. The crisis will pass only if everyone cooperates.

COVID-19 – Its Impact On The World!

For the first time in this century, the world is facing a health crisis that has affected every human being on this planet in some way or another.    On the positive side, the unprecedented scale of COVID-19 has forged greater cooperation between nations. We are learning from each other and trying to contain this dreaded disease before it claims more lives. However, it has indeed disrupted our lives like never before. So, let us take a look at the wide-ranging impact COVID-19 has had on our planet.

COVID-19 – The negative impact

  1. China, which has tided over the first wave of the COVID-19 crisis, is drowning under the waste it generated during its fight against the virus. It is grappling with large-scale disposal of tonnes of masks, protective gear, hazmat suits (hazardous materials suits) medicines, foils and containers, etc. This medical waste disposal problem is something that most countries will soon have to contend with.
  2. 7 big cats in the Bronx Zoo have tested positive for COVID-19. This raises the possibility that animals too may get infected. Zoos across the world are testing animals and disinfecting their enclosures to keep them safe.
  3. More than 18.6 lakh people have been infected globally and 1.15 lakh people have lost their lives.
  4. The global economy has gone into a recession with minimal industrial activity.
  5. Experts have said that many people will lose jobs globally.

COVID-19 – The positive impact

While COVID-19 has many negatives for the world, it has benefited nature in a few ways.
  1. Seismic noise (noise and vibrations made by human activity) has dropped. With no noise emanating from cars and buses, noise pollution is no longer plaguing us.
  2. The air quality index in every country has improved. Cars are off the roads. Similarly, air travel has become minimal. According to calculations by the Climate Group, this will produce 30 million tonnes of carbon emission less this year.
sub-heading         3. In China, the most polluted country in the world, the air pollution level has dropped by 25%. According to research by   Stanford University, this could save the lives of 4000 children under the age of 5 and 73,000 adults over the age of 70.        4. The international lens is on the illegal marketing of wildlife. It is believed that COVID-19 originated from a market where wildlife is sold and slaughtered. Wildlife conservationists are urging governments of all countries to take firm action against the poaching of wild animals and wildlife consumption.

The negative impact of coronavirus on India

  1. The number of COVID-19 infections in India has risen sharply over the past few days to more than 9000 cases.
  2. India’s economy has taken a beating. Sectors like tourism have seen huge losses in the past few months.
  3. In India, it is estimated that a huge part of the workforce (nearly 50 million people) has been laid off. The unemployment rate in India has shot up to 23.4%.

The positive impact of coronavirus on India

India’s too has derived some pleasant benefits from the lockdown and the halt of human activity-
  1. Nitrogen dioxide fell by 40-50% in all the metro cities. PM (particulate matter) 2.5 and PM 10 levels too have slid. Since factories are closed and transportation is not required, India’s AQI (Air Quality Index) is improving.
  2. The rivers of India have to bear the brunt of our inadequate waste disposal means. But ever since the lockdown was imposed, the water quality level of the Ganga and the Yamuna has improved and the chemical pollution level has dipped.
sub-heading-13.  Nearly 4.75 Lakh (the highest number in many years) Olive Ridley turtles have made their nests in the Rushikulya beach of Odisha due to empty beaches. The world has changed and we don’t know when this crisis will pass. All we can do is cooperate with our governments and actively practise social distancing to stay safe.Disclaimer: The information provided here is for educational/awareness purposes only and is not intended to be a substitute for medical treatment by a healthcare professional and should not be relied upon to diagnose or treat any medical condition. COVID-19 – Make Work From Home Fun & Productive!

COVID-19 has forced us all to stay home for our good. The lockdown and social distancing might seem inconvenient but these are the only ways to stop the spread of the coronavirus.Over the last couple of weeks, all sectors of industry have asked their employees to work from home (WFH). If your work can be done through your computer alone, then you too are possibly working from home right now. Here are a few ways you can make WFH simpler and enhance your productivity!

Steps to make work from home easy

Since we are all accustomed to working in an office, getting used to WFH can be a little challenging. But can deadlines and clients wait? No! That is why you have to get used to this new routine ASAP.

  1. Find the perfect spot

Chances are you are in lockdown with either your family or flatmates (if you are working in another city). So you need your own little space where you can work uninterrupted and without distractions. How do you do that? The solution – Work from your room.Close your door to block out noise. If there are children in the house strictly tell them your room is off bounds. Request others to respect your privacy. You can join them and help with tasks once your work is done. But during work, they will have to pretend you are not there.Mute all social media notifications.In-Blog-01

2.   Make sure you have all the work essentials ready

Ensure that your desktop or laptop is in order and the software you need is installed. You must have access to high-speed internet. You will require a table and an ergonomic chair that will keep you comfortable yet alert for the entire duration of work from home. You will also need power sockets nearby. Keep your chargers, notepad and pens with you. Does your work require skyping or videoconferencing? Then you must have a background that looks somewhat professional and suitable to be seen by colleagues, clients and bosses.

3. Establish a routine

If you are living with flatmates or your spouse, you have to delegate all tasks such as cooking, cleaning and washing evenly among yourselves so that both chores and office work can get done without any hitches. If you are with your parents, then help them with the household work and do your essential grocery shopping either in the morning before you start work or later in the evening. Make a list of things that need to be purchased so that you don’t have to go out repeatedly.Do you and your spouse have a child? Then your child too will be home all day as schools are closed. The two of you will have to take it in turns to help the kid with homework and keep him/her entertained.

4. Technology can help

Do you work with a team at your office? Communication problems may arise due to WFH, instructions may not be relayed on time and teamwork can slow down. How can you solve communication problems? Use Slack or Google Hangouts to communicate or video call as a group. Similarly, Asana and Trello can help you keep track of your team’s projects, progress, to-do lists and chalk up a plan of action.Always be available on call. Your boss or manager needs to be able to reach you during work hours. Try video calling, voice calling or simply phoning a colleague instead of sending emails for routine queries to ensure that no notification or update goes unnoticed. If you are the manager or team leader, then the onus is on you to raise your team’s morale. There should be video chats with the whole team regarding non-work topics where you should enquire about their health and safety in these times of distress.

  5. Take small breaks

Did you know that breaks are good for your brain and eyes? At work, you can stop for a little chat with a colleague or take a coffee break. But when you are working from home, you may forget to take breaks.Schedule an alarm every hour to remind you to take a break for 5 minutes. Drink coffee, walk around or stretch your legs to relax during this time.

In-Blog-02

We all need to take WHF as seriously as working from the office. Don’t give your boss an excuse to claim that you have been sluggish in your assignments. While WFH may seem complicated at first, you will soon get the hang of it. But above all else, stay home, avoid non-essential travel and stay safe.Disclaimer: The information provided here is for educational/awareness purposes only and is not intended to be a substitute for medical treatment by a healthcare professional and should not be relied upon to diagnose or treat any medical condition. A Complete Guide To Disinfecting Groceries During COVID-19!

Introduction

India has responded dutifully to the PM’s call of a national lockdown to defeat COVID-19. By now, we are all staying in our homes and practicing social distancing.

But have you eliminated all risks of contracting COVID-19? Although we are washing our hands thoroughly after we come in from outside, do we also have to clean and disinfect everything that comes in from outside like groceries? The answer is Yes!

Read on to understand the importance of disinfecting and how to do it.

Why clean groceries and other essentials

A kind of virus causes COVID-19.

Viruses, as you may know, can only grow and multiply inside a living host. But the bad news is, they can remain alive for anything between a couple of hours to a few days on different kinds of non-living things.

The same is true for coronavirus. Let us take a look at how long this virus can last on certain surfaces

This means you can bring the virus to your home through the things you purchase.

It is not necessary to sanitize the outside of food packaging. While there is some evidence that the virus can survive on hard surfaces, the risk from handling food packing is very low and there is no evidence that the illness can be transmitted in this way, washing the fruits and vegetables with copious amounts of water is highly recommended even without Covid as they might still be treated with pesticides and ripening agents.

Dr. Ashish Bajaj, M.B.B.S., M.D. in Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology

How coronavirus can end up in your homes through the things you buy

According to CDC plain water wash or scrub fruits and vegetables under running water—even if you do not plan to eat the peel. Germs on the peel or skin can get inside fruits and vegetables when you cut them. Washing fruits and vegetables with soap, detergent, or commercial produce wash is not recommended.

Can COVID-19 Impact Your Mental Health?

The Coronavirus spread is claiming more lives each day. The healthcare systems across the world are failing to effectively control the situation! You surely must be hearing and reading this in the news every day through news channels, newspapers and social media. Naturally, due to all this, the overwhelming emotion we feel right now is fear & anxiety.

However, don’t let these negative emotions overpower you! Let us understand our emotions better so that we are safe from the mental threat that COVID-19 poses.

The importance of lockdown and social distancing

India is going through a 21-day lockdown. We have all been advised to stay within our homes. We should only go out when necessary, for example, to purchase food supplies. This way, we will not risk being exposed to the virus and won’t pass it on to others either. To break the chain of transmission, lockdown and social distancing are of utmost importance.

The difficulty of isolating yourself

Lockdown means you can’t go out to work, to meet friends and loved ones, to the movies, to dinners at restaurants and everything that we love doing. Initially, it might seem to be very restful. After all, don’t we all complain about not being able to spend time with our families and catching up on sleep?

But after a few days, lockdown can become tedious and you will begin to feel like a prisoner in your own home.

Dealing with emotional problems during lockdown

1. Prepare a schedule

Keep yourself busy and draw up a packed schedule for yourself. You might be working from home. In your spare time, do some household chores such as cleaning, cooking, etc.

2. Entertain yourself

Let the calming effect of music and reading push out feelings of fear and confusion. And what better opportunity to binge-watch your favourite shows on the internet?

3. Revisit old hobbies

Remember your old hobby? Time to bring it back. Be it painting, strumming on the guitar, writing poems, sewing or gardening, you can pass many happy hours with your hobby and beat stress.

4. Eat healthily

Follow a healthy diet. Fresh meals keep us happy and content. Drink plenty of fluids- water and juices, to keep yourself hydrated and your body working properly.

5. Don’t skip exercises

You must exercise every day. Simple home cardio exercises can keep you fit and promote the production of happiness hormones like endorphins to keep you cheerful.

6. Sharing is caring

If necessary, share your food and essentials with your neighbours. Sharing makes you feel good about yourself. And you will also be doing a great service to society.

What NOT to do during these stressful times

  1. Avoid drinking alcohol and smoking. They may offer a temporary respite but they will have grave consequences on your physical and psychological health. They will also weaken your immunity.
  2. Do not make people who have come down with COVID-19 feel like outcasts. They need our love and support. If you know someone who is ill, call him/her up and enquire after his or her health.

Emotional issues if you come down with COVID-19

If you have come down with COVID-19, you may feel stressed because-

  1. You have been isolated for a long time and you want to be back in the community.
  2. You may fear passing on the infection to your loved ones.
  3. Many people are exposed to misinformation so these people might not welcome you back into the community even when you have recovered from the illness completely.

How to recognize mental health problems?

Be prepared for the possibility that the pandemic might trigger psychological problems in people you love. Watch out for these symptoms-

  1.   Insomnia
  2. A change in the sleep-wake pattern
  3. Difficulty in concentrating
  4. Increased use of tobacco, drugs or alcohol
  5. Aggravation of health problems

Extend your full support to your loved ones if they have a mental health problem.

Worsening of mental issues

People who had already been diagnosed with psychological issues may suffer a new set of challenges such as-

  1. Social distancing may make them withdrawn, irritable and vulnerable to mood swings.
  2. They may refuse medication and counselling.
  3. Prevailing fears about the virus can aggravate their mental health issues.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed us. We don’t know when it will blow over. Yes, these are difficult times. But remember, you are not alone. The whole world is in it together.

Keep your spirits up, because a cheerful and optimistic outlook can be the light that guides us through this dark tunnel.

COVID-19 – Here’s How The Elderly Can Stay Protected!

It’s time to take extra care of our parents and grandparents! If we are to go by global as well as national statistics, a worrying trend emerges. Senior citizens (60 years and above) are more susceptible to COVID-19 than other age groups. The fatality rate of this infection is higher for the elderly as well.

Why are the elderly so vulnerable to COVID-19?

It is because, as people grow older, their immunity becomes weaker and they are less capable of fighting off viruses. Besides, co-morbidities or co-occurring diseases are more prevalent amongst the elderly than other age groups. Illnesses like high blood pressure, chronic kidney disease, heart disorders, obstructive pulmonary disease or diabetes can make COVID-19 fatal.  Now that we know why the elderly population is vulnerable to COVID-19, let us assure you that there are ways in which senior citizens can be kept completely safe from this global pandemic.

Here are some dos and don’ts for senior citizens –

Do’s

  1.    Stay at home and do not entertain guests or visitors at home. Any of them could have the COVID-19 infection.
  2. If meeting with people is essential, then you must maintain a distance of at least 1 metre (3.2 feet) from them.
  3.    Wash your hands with soap and water frequently, especially after handling anything that came from outside (groceries, newspapers, etc.)                                                                                                                                                                                                                                In-Blog-01
  4. Make sure that you are getting good quality nutrition through freshly cooked home meals.
  5. Optimum hydration is an absolute must. Plenty of clean water and fruit juices (without sugar) are recommended.
  6. Regular exercise can boost immunity. Simple activities like walking inside the house or climbing the stairs can be considered.
  7. Make sure that you are taking the prescribed doses of your medicines for pre-existing ailments.
  8. If any elective surgery (like a cataract removal procedure) is scheduled during the lockdown, it must be postponed. Going to a hospital can expose you to COVID-19.
  9.    Doorbells, door handles, keys and other such frequently touched objects must be cleaned regularly.
  10.    Stay in touch with your family members who are not living with you through phone calls and video conferencing.
  11. If you observe any symptoms of COVID-19, go to a hospital immediately.

Don’ts

  1.    Do not sneeze or cough into your hands or with your mouth uncovered.
  2.    Do not touch your face, mouth, nose or eyes with unwashed hands.
  3.    Do not go near those who appear sick.
  4.    Don’t self-medicate.
  5.    Do not shake hands or hug.
  6.    Do not go for your routine health check-up now.
  7.    Do not go to markets, public parks where plenty of people gather.
  8.    Do not step out of your house unless necessary.
The elderly people need our help now. It is time to step up and do our bit to take care of them. All of us have senior citizens in our families whom we love and cherish. That is why we need to rigorously follow the COVID-19 guidelines so that this pandemic does not challenge their health.Stay home and practise social distancing to keep yourself safe! You can now assess yourself and your loved ones for Coronavirus risk at home with PharmEasy’s AI-Powered Bot – Covid Assist.
