How To Protect Yourself From Coronavirus At Workplace?

As you are reading this, millions of people, including you, are wondering when this Coronavirus outbreak will come to a halt, which has become one of the most disastrous outbreaks that humankind has seen in recent times. One of the concerns surrounding the pandemic is, ”How can I protect myself from this virus at my workplace?”  Many organizations in India have started taking safety precautions, some informing their employees to work from home. But, since there are a considerable number of organizations still operating, there is a dire need for all employees to understand the spread of Coronavirus and what precautions they can take.  Coronavirus or COVID-19 belongs to the large family of viruses that can transmit through cough droplets or an infected surface. People with heart problems, diabetes, or lung disease, especially older people, are more prone to getting severely affected and should be extra cautious. The known symptoms are: People experiencing any of these symptoms or those who have had contact with a COVID-19 patient should seek immediate medical attention regardless of their age. There is no cure known for Coronavirus yet, so the only option available is to take safety precautions, such as:

1. Keep your workplace sanitized and clean

A clean environment is critical in order to combat any viral disease. Ensure that your workplace is well-sanitized. All surfaces at the workplace should be cleaned with disinfectant on a regular basis. Also, sit one seat further away from others, if possible.

2. Wear a mask, if you are sick

If an employee is sick or suffering from the common cold, they should seek medical attention and be advised to work from home until they recover. Moreover, they should wear masks, since they are more prone to getting infected and transmitting the infection.  

3. Use sanitisers/ hand wash liquids and disposable wipes

One of the safety precautions recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), is that you should wash your hands regularly and properly with liquids, keeping them clean with disposable wipes or sanitisers. One should immediately sanitize their hands after touching a door handle, lift button or any other surface that might possibly pass infection, and after you have been outdoors.

4. Stay home, if you travel frequently  

Employees whose job role involves frequent travel should be asked to stay at home if they have recently visited or returned from a place that is already infected. They should be advised to go for a medical check-up if they experience any of the symptoms listed above.  

5. Keep your immune system healthy

It is essential to ensure that you eat healthy, keep yourself hydrated, and take the necessary medications, if any, in order to keep your immune system healthy. Follow good respiratory hygiene, maintain social distancing and avoid touching your face.The WHO has already declared the Coronavirus outbreak as a worldwide pandemic.
