April 11 is designated as World Parkinson’s Day every year and is used to raise awareness of this complex illness. With over 1 million people diagnosed with Parkinson’s in India alone, we’ve answered some of the most common questions about it.


What is Parkinson’s? Is there a cure?

Parkinson’s is caused by an imbalance of the neurochemicals dopamine and acetylcholine. At present, there is no cure.

What are the 5 stages of Parkinson’s?

  • Stage I – Mild symptoms that don’t interfere with daily activities.
  • Stage II – Symptoms interfere with daily activities.
  • Stage III – Symptoms worsen, but the person is still capable of independent living.
  • Stage IV – Independent living is almost impossible due to limitations in eating, bathing, dressing, sleeping, and walking. 
  • Stage V – Symptoms so severe that even standing and walking may become impossible. The person becomes bedridden and needs a wheelchair to be moved around.

How does Parkinson’s disease affect the body?

Parkinson’s primarily shows motor symptoms such as tremors, slowing of movements, and rigidity. It can also cause depression, attention problems, fatigue, etc.

How quickly does Parkinson’s progress?

The progression is usually slow, but different people are affected differently.

How can Parkinson’s disease be slowed down?

Early diagnosis is key, along with medication that helps improve quality of life, exercise and safety aids.

Can yoga or exercise cure Parkinson’s?

Yoga and exercise can help improve posture and functional ability, but there is no cure for Parkinson’s.

How long can a person live with Parkinson’s disease? Is it fatal?

Parkinson’s doesn’t usually reduce a person’s life expectancy, especially with medicine and aid. But the quality of life can be severely affected, and early deaths are a possibility due to the increased chances of accidents.

Can Parkinson’s be treated with marijuana?

Marijuana has been found to improve Parkinson’s symptoms, but we don’t yet know the side side-effects of long-term treatment using marijuana. More research is required.

Can kids develop Parkinson’s disease?

Kids may have Parkinson-like symptoms, known as Juvenile Parkinsonism, but it is very rare and is caused by genetic alterations.
