8 Best Home Remedies For Itchy Scalp

The current weather is unpredictable same as our hair. The scalp and hair are the most vulnerable part of our body that may get affected by every minute internal and external changes.

Be it summer, winter, or rainy season itchy scalp may be caused at any point of the time. The sudden urge to itch your scalp is irresistible that leaves us uncomfortable and embarrassed. There are various reasons behind your itchy scalp, from a simple dry scalp to some severe scalp infection. Before trying any remedy, always try to find out the underlying cause.

Causes of itchy scalp

  • Dandruff

  • Fungal infections – tinea capitis, or ringworm
  • Atopic dermatitis
  • Autoimmune disorders, such as psoriasis

1: Apple cider vinegar 

Apple cider vinegar has anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fungal properties. It may reduce the dandruff production that causes itching. The malic acid present in the apple works as an astringent that reduces itching considerably. 

How to use –

  • Dilute ¼ cup of apple cider vinegar in a cup of water.
  • Apply this mixture on the scalp and leave it for 10 minutes.
  • Wash it off with a mild shampoo and cold water.

2: Coconut oil

Organic coconut oil contains lauric acid, a saturated fat that has antimicrobial properties. This acid helps the skin absorb coconut oil efficiently and locks the moisture in the scalp. Coconut oil reduces the dryness of the scalp and provides relief from itchy scalp. 

How to use-

  • Warm two tablespoon of coconut oil.
  • Dip a cotton ball in the oil and apply it all over the scalp.
  • Massage the scalp with your fingertips for five minutes for it to be absorbed.
  • Keep it overnight and wash in the morning with a mild shampoo. 

3: Aloe vera 

Aloe vera gives a natural soothing effect that kelp treats dry and itchy scalp. It works as a moisturizer and reduces irritation. 

How to use –

  • Remove the gel from the aloe vera leaf and apply it directly to the scalp. You can also use organic, readymade aloe vera gel.
  • Leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Rinse with lukewarm water. 

4: Lemon juice

Lemon juice is acidic that has anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. It helps clears the scalp of accumulated dirt and dead cells. Always mix lemon juice with curd or water due to its acidic nature.

How to use –

  • Dilute 2-3 tablespoons of lemon juice in ½ a cup of water.
  • Apply this solution over your scalp and left for 10 minutes.
  • Rinse with water and mild shampoo. 

5: Onion juice

Onion juice is rich in sulphur that helps to minimize hair thinning and nourishes hair follicles. It helps moisturize your hair and reduce itchiness. Onion has antimicrobial properties that keep your scalp healthy, clean and helps in reducing inflammation.

How to use –

  • Peel and grate the onion and squeeze out the onion juice. 
  • Apply this on the scalp thoroughly using a cotton ball.
  • Leave it for 20 to 30 minutes before rinsing it off with shampoo.

6: Neem oil

Neem oil has antimicrobial and anti-fungal properties that used since ancient times. 

How to use –

  • Add 5-6 drops of neem oil in the 2 tablespoons of coconut oil. Mix it will.
  • Apply the mixture to the scalp and leave it on for 15 minutes.
  • Rinse hair with a mild shampoo.

7: Tea tree oil 

Tea tree oil contains terpenes. It has anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties that work towards reducing the itchiness of the scalp. It also moisturizes and nourishes the scalp and eliminates dryness. 

How to use –

  • Take 5-7 drops of oil and apply it directly to the scalp.
  • Massage it thoroughly for few minutes and leave it overnight.

8: Peppermint oil 

Peppermint oil has been used traditionally for itchy scalp and dandruff. It has anti-bacterial properties.

How to use –

  • Dilute peppermint oil with your favorite oil like coconut or almond oil. 
  • Massage onto your scalp and leave for 30 minutes. 
  • Wash it off with cold water.
