Teeth are the framework for our face that provides the perfect shape to our face. We use them a lot. We smile with our teeth, and we eat or drink with our teeth as well.
Sometimes you may have that extreme discomfort in your teeth after eating some hot or cold food. That discomfort is because of your over-sensitive teeth nerves. Tooth sensitivity is a sharp and piercing pain going right down to the deep nerve endings of your tooth.
Here are some reasons and trigger factors behind tooth sensitivity. The main reason is when the enamel (the protective layer of the tooth) wears down. It makes the dentin underneath more permeable, allowing liquids and gases to pass through easily, which causes that pain.
Some causes wear down the enamel and lead to tooth sensitivity –
- Erosion of the tooth due to the consumption of highly acidic, hot, or cold food and beverages
- Tooth grinding
- Damaged tooth enamel due to brushing aggressively or because of hard toothbrush
- Gum recession
- Tooth decay
- Some dental treatments including fillings, crowns, etc.
Home remedies for sensitive teeth
1: Saltwater rinse
Salt acts as an anti-inflammatory and ant-septic agent that helps get rid of tooth sensitivity. Saltwater is one of the most common solutions to tooth sensitivity or any dental problems. It helps maintain the pH balance of the mouth to create a more alkaline environment in which harmful bacteria cannot survive for long.
To make a saltwater rinse, we need a salt ½ teaspoon and a glass of lukewarm water. Mix it well and swish the solution in your mouth for up to 30 seconds. Then spit it out.
2: Honey and warm water
Honey has antibacterial properties that help in wound healing and reduce pain, swelling, and inflammation.
When faced with tooth sensitivity, rinse your mouth with a solution of warm water and a teaspoon of honey.
Turmeric beneficial in many ways because of the presence of Curcumin in it that acts as an anti-inflammatory. In Ayurveda, it helps in healing the wound and killing the pain.
You can alleviate the pain of a sensitive tooth by massaging ground turmeric on the affected tooth. Another alternative is taking half a teaspoon of turmeric with a similar amount of salt and mustard oil. Mix this and apply the paste on the affected part twice a day for pain relief.
There might be a possibility of bacterial growth in teeth when you have extreme pain and sensitivity there. For this, coconut oil can help – a remedy that has been used for many years as an oral health aid. When you swish liquefied coconut oil around in your mouth, it’s called oil pulling. It hinders bacterial growth in the mouth, breaks down plaque on teeth, and removes germs.
All that is required is a tablespoon of melted coconut oil. It is swished around inside the mouth for 20 seconds and spit out.
5: Guava leaves
It seems weird, but guava leaves work excellently to reduce tooth sensitivity and pain. It contains flavonoids like quercetin, kaempferol, and rutin. It has anti-inflammatory properties that help relieve tooth sensitivity and toothache.
Just chew a few leaves for 2-3 minutes and spit them before you rinse your mouth. You can also use its water by putting 3-4 leaves; in the water and bring it to a boil.
Garlic may give you pungent tastes in the mouth, but it has some compounds to offer that are beneficial for oral health. One of these compounds found in high amounts in garlic is the beneficial allicin. Allicin is an antibacterial and pain-relieving compound.
Garlic can be sliced and applied directly to the affected teeth or a paste that contains a clove of garlic with a few drops of water and a half teaspoon of salt. This paste is applied directly to the sensitive area.
Cloves and their oil is an ancient remedy to treat oral disorders. It has anti-inflammatory, germicidal, and analgesic properties. Cloves can
reduce inflammation, bacteria overgrowth, and pain.
The essential oils present in cloves are potent and should always be used in small amounts in another carrier, such as coconut or avocado oil. Or you can keep one clove bud in the affected part for some time.
